007 Legends (Video Game Review)

007 Legends is the newest work from developer Eurocom and publisher Activision, who is known for their work with the Call of Duty series. While the new Bond video game may not show the polish of Activision's bigger titles, it's still a nice trip down memory lane as you explore missions based loosely on the missions of James Bond cinematic history. From Goldfinger on through On Her Majesty's Secret Service, License to Kill, Die Another Day and Moonraker, 007 Legends packs a lot of content into one simple package, and even if the missions don't stay completely true to the storylines of the classic films, there's still something to enjoy about blasting your way through hordes of henchmen in modern takes on these classic environments. 007 Legends is a game for Bond fans from the same team that brought the world the beloved remake of the classic Goldeneye 007: Reloaded, so you can rest assured that the game is in good hands.

The story of 007 Legends picks up during the events of the upcoming release of Skyfall. Unfortunately, James Bond ends up being shot during his mission and falls from a moving train to the cold depths of the waters below. As Bond sinks, he begins reliving his historic life in flashes before his eyes, and it's in these flashbacks where you'll relive some of the greatest moments of James Bond's life and the 007 film series. 007 Legends is a new James Bond game set in a modern world, which simply means that not all of the missions and environments are not as you remember them. You'll also be playing the game as the Daniel Craig Bond during the game's missions, which isn't as off putting as seeing Bond played by a different actor from a Roger Moore or Sean Connery flick only to have a different actor's voice come out of Daniel Craig's mouth. Once you've completed the game, you'll awaken and prepare for the Skyfall free, post-launch DLC that arrives when the movie hits theaters in early November.

007 Legends is a bit confused about the type of game it is at times. 007 Legends isn't a stealth game, but it does have moments that require you to sneak past guards, using silenced weapons or quick hits to the back of an unsuspecting guard's head to knock them out. Yet the stealth mechanics pretty much end there with no real way to determine how guards are seeing or hearing you and only a crouch button assisting you with moving through the game quietly. You'll also encounter puzzles throughout the game that are surprisingly fun to solve and there are plenty of encounters with super villains and high speed driving sequences even if both leave a little left to desire in polish. The shooting action is solid however, and this seeps into the game's multiplayer experience with fantastic results. While the game's single player campaign may be a bit rough around the edges, 007 Legends shines with competitive modes online, bringing back fond memories of the Goldeneye days from so many years ago. In fact, 007 Legends is one of the few modern day shooters to actually include split-screen multiplayer for up to four players like was featured in the classic titles that made us love the first-person shooter genre in the first place. You'll unlock weapons and upgrades with a level progression system that includes a "Prestige" like 00 Specialization mode for even rarer unlocks. Of course, you'll find a good variety of multiplayer modes as well including classic deathmatch modes and more unique ones that may require you to retrieve data or defuse a bomb.

Bond is back in 007 Legends, and playing as everyone's favorite secret agent is more fun than ever. 007 Legends isn't perfect, but you could sure do a lot worse in a packed shooter genre that produces plenty of great and abysmal games alike. 007 Legends allows you to relive the greatest James Bond moments from the last 50 years, and with solid shooting action and a strong multiplayer along for the ride, the game is one that all 007 fans should pick up. The game is a fun one in which you'll fight in moving cable cars, narrowly escape death in a plummeting airplane, and of course, encounter Pussy Galore! Pick up your copy of 007 Legends today, kick back and enjoy the game with a nice vodka martini, shaken not stirred obviously.

007 Legends is now available from all major retailers and can be purchased for the MSRP of $59.99 and can be purchased for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. 007 Legends is rated T by the ESRB for Blood, Drug Reference, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes & Violence.
