Developer and publisher Codemasters is back again this year with the follow up release to their 2008 hit Race Driver: Grid. Grid 2 continues the rich tradition of high quality racing titles from Codemasters with an impressive new storyline, additional cars and different real life inspired tracks. Though Grid 2 does have its flaws that are sure to turn off some racing enthusiasts including limited camera views and less than an abundance of different tracks. Grid 2 combines elements of pure simulation and arcade style racing games and is a fine looking game with a great presentation. Grid 2 is a fun racing title that may have released too late in the console cycle, but it shouldn't be overlooked if you're a fan of racing games.
The main storyline of Grid 2 is based around the fictional racing league known as World Series Racing created by racing superfan Patrick Callahan. The up and coming racing league is striving to become popular around the world, and your racer is one of the star drivers from the beginning of the league. You will compete in several seasons worth of races across a variety of real life locations including the United States, United Kingdom and other parts of Europe and Asia. Grid 2 does a great job of keeping the player excited for the next race with plenty of different content that pushes the game's storyline forward including YouTube video clips, forum threads, interviews and even more sophisticated segments from ESPN motor sports segments. It's really cool to continue racing and working to make World Series Racing a recognizable racing entity around the world and see how the fictional fan base continues to grow over each season. The exciting single player campaign is one of the biggest reasons fans should pay attention to Grid 2's release this month.
There are over 40 different cars featured in Grid 2 as well as a variety of game modes outside of the game's main campaign. Single Races, Endurance, Eliminator, Drift, Touge, Checkpoint, Face Off, Time Attack and Overtake all offer up unique gameplay types and break up the monotony of playing the same dozen or so tracks. Still, racing around Paris, Dubai, Chicago and some of the other locations of the game remains fun due to a deep multiplayer experience that allows for up to 12 players to race together in a single session. The multiplayer of Grid 2 is deep and features experience points and career statistics that are kept separate from the single player experience. Racing online means restarting player progress from scratch, but it also means unlocking and customizing more cars with a variety of performance enhancing parts and aesthetic pieces for additional replay value. Codemaster's RaceNet keeps track of all statistical information and other important details to provide a central hub where players can keep track of their online careers and learn who needs to be taken out as a new rival. The great multiplayer experience is enhanced with social features that allow players to easily share replays, highlights and more directly through YouTube or post to Facebook and Twitter to remind friends of the beating you've given them.
Grid 2 is an amazing looking game that could pass as a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One title with superior graphics, lighting and special effects that make the game's cars look as realistic as possible and the environments look even more stunning. Simply cruising around the tracks without racing can be fun while looking through the backgrounds spotting fireworks in the city stages or wildlife in the country settings. A nice soundtrack complements the game nicely as well, kicking in at just the right moments to stress the importance of a key moment in races. Battling against fictional race groups and building up a fan base in the single player experience is vastly entertaining thanks to fun segments found between races, and great controls ensure the player always has full control over the vehicle. Only a few flaws exist in Grid 2's presentation, and the casual racing fan will hardly notice a difference. If you're looking for an exciting new racing title to end this console generation, check out Grid 2 today!
