Sidekick Cycle (Video Game Review)

Sidekick Cycle is a brand-new game from It Matters Games and Global Gaming Initiative (GGI) for iPhone and iPad. Sidekick Cycle is unique in many ways but the most important is its aim to help the community by utilizing the power of video games. Players are able to bask in the game’s fun gameplay by riding a bike through obstacle-style courses while donating real bikes to children in Africa. For every 387 downloads of the game, GGI will purchase one bicycle for a kid in Africa through World Bicycle Relief. Players interested in the progress of the campaign can check Sidekick Cycle’s home screen to see the impact that fellow gamers are making.

In Sidekick Cycle players step into the shoes of an adventure-seeking biker who makes his way through difficult timed courses while collecting coins and gears. Players will have to try and beat their best times as they travel across three distinctive worlds with 10 levels each. When you first start the game, you will see the Savannah map and the beautiful landscape of Africa that you will race alongside. Sidekick Cycle’s simple gameplay is entreatingly addictive as you try to complete each level by the time limit while collecting all the gears along the way. Every time you complete the race and stated objectives you receive a crown. Sidekick Cycle has high replay value because you can replay races to get better times and try to gain all of the crowns. Also, you can use coins to upgrade your bike and purchase animal sidekicks for even more fun!

Players can use animal sidekicks to get better times in the race and each one has its unique advantages. Cash Koala doubles collected coins, Cherub Cheetah lets you come back from a crash, Magno Money attracts coins, and Rocky Rhino lets you ride through rocks and logs. You can add some sidekicks with the coins you earn during gameplay while some require in-game purchases. Sidekick Cycle’s gameplay features one-touch controls where you will touch the screen to jump upcoming obstacles or hold it down to perform awesome tricks. Tricks help add points to your score and add additional speed boosts to finish the race before the time runs out. Players will also tap the screen to pick up coins or gears as well. Sidekick Cycle features simple mechanics that can be picked up quickly by anyone looking to play this intriguing title.

Sidekick Cycle features decent looking graphics, a fun soundtrack and immersive gameplay that is sure to keep you busy for hours on end. As you progress, new courses will unlock which gives you a break from having to look at the same background for each race while having the option to upgrade your bike as you go. Sidekick Cycle isn’t perfect by any means and there were times when we experienced an occasional hiccup in regards to sound and graphics. Also, for some, Sidekick Cycle can become a bit repetitive no matter how many tricks you perform or sidekicks you collect. But in the end, Sidekick Cycle is a solid game well worth the download. And again, you can’t overlook the fact that it helps a charitable cause which provides new bikes to children in Africa!

Sidekick Cycle is now available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch through the App Store for $0.99. Players will be able to pick up an Android version sometime this Fall. To learn more, visit the official Sidekick Cycle website.

Buffet Bliss or Southern Swing-and-a-Miss? A Bite at Kacey’s in Huntsville

Walk through the doors of Kacey’s Country Cooking in Huntsville and you’re greeted by the comforting smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread that could double as perfume for any true Southerner. This is where the buffet line reigns supreme, the sweet tea flows endlessly, and dessert is always just an arm’s reach away. For many locals, Kacey’s is a comfort food paradise. Fans brag about the fried green tomatoes, juicy pork chops, slow-cooked beef tips, and banana pudding that deserves its own holiday. The staff are another highlight—quick with refills, friendly enough to feel like family, and the kind of people who can make a buffet feel like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. But Kacey’s has its critics too. Some diners rave about “the best bang for your buck in town,” while others complain that the food sometimes veers into “straight-from-the-can” territory. Like most buffets, it’s a roll of the dice: hit the line on a good day and you’ll be full and happy; catch it on an...

Step Back in Time at Ole Towne Café in Ardmore

If you’ve ever wished you could step into your grandma’s kitchen and smell fresh biscuits baking while bacon sizzles in the skillet, Ole Towne Café in Ardmore, Alabama, is the next best thing. Tucked along Main Street, this little diner doesn’t just serve food—it serves nostalgia. Walking in, you’re greeted with that small-town charm you just can’t fake. The walls are lined with country décor, the coffee flows like a friendly neighbor’s gossip, and everyone seems to know everyone else. Even if you’re new in town, you’ll feel like family after your first cup of coffee. The menu is straight out of a Southern comfort cookbook. The catfish plates are fried to crispy perfection, the hamburger steaks come smothered in gravy that tastes like Sunday supper, and the breakfast plates are legendary—big fluffy pancakes, biscuits as big as your hand, and hash browns that come golden and crispy. And let’s not forget dessert. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, save room for the pies. Ole Towne Café d...
