Exclusive Interview: Cubical Drift CEO Michel Thomazeau Talks Planets³

Planets³ is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter and introduces players to a beautiful 3D voxel-based adventure. We recently had the chance to talk with Michel Thomazeau, CEO of Cubical Drift, about the upcoming open-world RPG. Move over Minecraft because Planets³ is ready to give you a run for your money--through space! Read on to learn more.

AMANDA DYAR:
First off, tell us a little bit about Planets³ and how the concept came about for it?

MICHEL THOMAZEAU: Planets³ is all about bringing a story over a voxel world. Planets³ is a RPG with all that it is involved. There will be a storyline with a lot of quests, characters that will accompany you in your adventure; some of them will help you to progress.

And we want to bring the construction aspect in the quest: some of them will ask you to build specific structures.

AMANDA: The Kickstarter is currently going strong, what can you tell us about it and what you hope to accomplish if Planets³ is fully funded?

MICHEL: We hope that it will be successful; we still have a long way to go. A successful campaign will allow us to make the game we have dreamed of. There is a lot of work to accomplish, but with the help of all backers we will make this great game.

AMANDA: I was very impressed with the visuals in Planets³ which are beautifully vibrant and colorful. What inspired the game's artwork?

MICHEL: We wanted a game that bring joy, colorful landscape bring this kind of well-being atmosphere. The inspiration come from different RPG or adventure game like Zelda.

AMANDA: The game seems to have some similar mechanics to Minecraft. What are the differences and similarities between Planets³ and Mine craft for those fans looking for a new adventure outside the world of Minecraft?

MICHEL: First its art, the multiple block shapes allow real diversity of creation. As you can see in the concept art, it is really something else.

Second, our game is a RPG, you will have a complete story from the start of the game to the end of the story. There will be NPCs, with their own stories, which will follow you during all your adventure, helping you to progress. There will be a simple but deep craft system. Construction will even take part in the story.

And third: space!

AMANDA: Planets³ is an evolving story with an open world that players are free to explore. Can you tell us some of the possibilities that lie ahead for players within this new game universe?

MICHEL: The story will be linear, but there will be a lot of annex randomly generated quests.

Also Planets³ is a multiplayer game, when the story could be done in a “coop” mode. The game in multi will be much more fun that in solo.

AMANDA: Thank you for your time. Is there anything else you would like to mention?

MICHEL:
Support us on Kickstarter, together we will make a great game!

About Planets³
Planets³ is a beautifully presented, unique mix of adventure, RPG, dungeon crawler and building. Set in a multi-player universe, players can shape their own adventure and visit multiple planets, each composed of nearly 30 trillion blocks. Truly breath-taking landscapes and environments will be achieved through voxel-based graphics and the “Long Distance Display Engine”. Progress through the game is achieved through “levelling-up” their character, embarking on various story-driven quests, tool-building and habitation and vehicle crafting. All of these things contributing to ever-deeper exploration of the planets in the vast universe. Planets³ also offers side quests allowing players to unlock secrets of the game’s world and to find special items only reachable in secondary storylines.
