5 Worst Video Game Dads of All-Time

Father’s Day is the one day a year where you get to celebrate the man that worked his life away to make a living for your family, protected you and made you the person you are today. Of course not everyone can be the model dad, and video games seem to have main characters with more daddy issues and terrible parents than any form of media. So in honor of Father’s day, here are the 5 worst video game dads of all-time who should make you appreciate your own father a little more.

5. Big Daddy (Bioshock series) – Sure, you could argue the Big Daddy is a good father, because he fights with all of his power to protect his daughter the Little Sister, but that would be a bit like glorifying a father who protects his kids by walking them through the ghetto armed with an AK-47. The Big Daddy does nothing to shield his daughter away from the violence of the world and doesn’t attempt to make a better life for her instead allowing her to grow up in the misery that is Rapture. The only real exception to these monstrosities is Subject Delta who would sacrifice himself in order to save Eleanor and the other Little Sisters.

4. William Birkin (Resident Evil series) – Maybe you think your dad is a bad fella, but did he constantly put his work before you only to have that work turn out to be the zombie apocalypse? Didn’t think so, but William Birkin did just that to little Sherry by completing the G-Virus. If that wasn’t bad enough to allow him to win worst parent of the year for 1998, William went on to infuse himself with the G-Virus to become a mutated monster himself, and he later implanted the G-Virus embryo in his daughter ensuring Sherry would never have a normal life long after he was dead and gone. Thanks a lot dad!

3. Kratos (God of War series) – Kratos wasn’t always a bad dad. Sure, he went around fighting in plenty of wars which often left his wife Lysandra and daughter Calliope alone to fend for themselves, but this is often the case for many families in times of war. Kratos and his daughter were very close whenever they had a chance to be together, and Kratos even managed to save Calliope’s life one more than one occasion. Still, nothing could be worse than killing your own kid whether in a rage fueled killing frenzy or not. Not cool Kratos, not cool.

2. Jecht (Final Fantasy X) – For as bad as killing your own kid is, constantly insulting them and leaving them a blubbering mess every night as a result of bad parenting and your addiction to alcohol is probably worse. Jecht made his son Tidus’ life a living hell from start to finish by scarring him for life with a constant barrage of insults and making him feel that he’d never live up to his father’s iconic status, randomly disappearing to make the emotionally broken Tidus fend for himself and ending his life by becoming a monster of near infinite power that would attempt to kill Tidus, the only woman he ever loved, all of their friends and thousands of other innocent people.

1. Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid series) – When your dad has a porno sounding nickname like Naked Snake, you know you got screwed at having a good childhood. This seems all the more apparent when see that two of his clones became pure evil with plans of destroying the world, and his one other decent son becomes a chain smoker with some questionable ethics himself. If that wasn’t bad enough, Big Boss tried to kill his offspring on numerous occasions and had his own plans of world domination that were ultimately faltered by Solid Snake. Ultimately, Big Boss has to be considered the worst dad of all-time, single parent or not.
