Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition (Video Game Review)

One of the biggest video game icons of the 80s was a little green amphibian called Frogger. Frogger managed to hop his way from arcades to Atari, and 30 years and many sequels later, Frogger is back and ready for players to jump right in and experience the excitement of Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition. The new title combines classic Frogger gameplay with plenty of new game modes, graphical improvements and sound enhancements for a low asking price of 800 Microsoft Points, $9.99 on PlayStation Network or 1000 Nintendo Points.

Every gamer should know by now that Frogger is a classic title that tasks players with making their way from the bottom of the map across dangerous highways and a deadly lake to safety. Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition brings back this gameplay in Classic Mode but adds many improvements to the aged mechanics. Controls are far more precise now and even allow you to use your controller's face buttons to move about if you'd like. You'll also be able to choose between the classic controls of single hops and continuous hops before the start of every match. In addition to the control options, you'll also find it simplistic to switch between styles that change the way Frogger looks and various songs that offer a variety of different beats as you play.

Classic Mode is a blast on its own, but Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition adds seven other game modes to experience. Other single player modes include Paint where you'll attempt to jump over correct tiles to paint a picture, Twin Frogger where you control two frogs simultaneously and Frogger Freak Out where random single player game modes load until you've died or completed the game. There are also 20 different single player challenges you can complete to unlock an achievement/trophy and the classic Castlevania style. You'll also have access to three other multiplayer modes in the game including Tile Capture where players compete to control the most tiles on the board, Battle Royale where powerups are plenty as you attempt to squish your opponents and Lady Frog Rescue where the player that can save the most female frogs is named the winner. All of these great game modes are addictive and add plenty of replay value to a game that has already been a fan favorite for decades.

You'll find that Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition is a joy to play thanks in large part to the game's colorful graphics and ability to change styles and songs until you find the right combination for yourself. The vibrant colors of the game extends into the game's menus and user interface as well. Quick loading times and the fancy in-game menus ensure you'll be able to get into the matches you want quickly and efficiently. Classic Frogger sound effects have returned for Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition making the game fondly reminiscent for long time fans of the game. The game also features online leaderboards that allow you to compete with players from across the world to see who can attain the highest score possible.

If you have ever enjoyed a Frogger title in the past, you've got to pick up Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition. The new title brings a refreshing feel to a classic game with plenty of new tweaks and improvements you've come to expect from the series in the past 30 years. Frogger has definitely aged well, and it's nice to see a new game from the famous mascot that can be enjoyed by fans young and older alike. Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition is a great title that should immediately become part of your gaming collection today!
