With the emergence of independent games and great downloadable marketplace destinations such as PlayStation Network, Steam, Xbox LIVE Arcade, Ouya and more, two things become abundantly obvious: there’s never been a better time to be an independent developer or a fan of indie games. There are tons of worthy titles that need to be brought over to the PlayStation Network from other distributors. Of course, PlayStation Network already has a library full of great exclusives such as Journey, Sound Shapes and Papo & Yo, but as PlayStation owners, we can’t have enough great games for our systems. So we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 Games That Need to be Added to PlayStation Network. Here goes!
5. Spelunky
Spelunky was originally a free to play title on PC for several years until Microsoft wised up and brought the addictive platformer to Xbox LIVE Arcade with an all new HD version of the classic game. Spelunky is a punishing rougelike that challenges players with making their way through a mysterious cave that randomly generates stages full of dangerous enemies and traps. From the surface, Spelunky isn’t anything special, but you’ll quickly learn this game is more than it appears as numerous secrets abound and simply making your way through the first of four themed cave sets will take complete concentration and great skill. The Xbox LIVE Arcade version sweetened the deal with enhanced graphics, a new world, cooperative play and a competitive multiplayer mode. Now if it would only come to PlayStation Network….
4. Canabalt 2
Canabalt is easily the most simplistic game on this list. The game can only be described as a platformer in which you never stop running from some never seen or explained enemy. As the world explodes around you in what looks like a scene taken straight out of alien invasion films such as War of the Worlds, you’ll jump from building to building as they literally crumble beneath your feet all while dodging debris that slows you down, bombs that will explode and kill you upon impact and the ever so dangerous windows that will send you plummeting to the streets below if you are not careful. Give Canabalt a minor face lift so that your character doesn’t look so much like Michael Jackson, add in some online features such as online leaderboards and an ability to challenge friends’ ghost distances, and you’ve got one great time killing game that will have you playing for hours on end and would make a sequel bound to set records!
3. Dust: An Elysian Tail
Xbox LIVE’s Summer of Arcade 2012 brought the gaming world plenty of great titles, but Dust: An Elysian Tail is probably the best of the promotion. With gameplay modeled after classic action RPG titles such as PlayStation’s Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Dust: An Elysian Tail added plenty of great new features to a timeless playstyle and great graphics that may be the best any platform has seen in a downloadable game. The Elysian Tail series was actually a PC title first, so not only does PlayStation Network need Dust, but Sony needs to acquire the other games in the series as well including the future releases. This is one of the many recent releases that make PlayStation 3 owners a bit jealous of Xbox 360 gamers and with good reason.
2. FarmVille 2
Who hasn’t played FarmVille? Whether you still enjoy playing it or have been wore out on this title for a while, the all new FarmVille 2 has arrived bringing with it a whole barn full of new features that makes playing the game feel more like owning your own farm than ever before. The only thing that could make the game more fun to play would be throwing it onto the PlayStation Network with trophy support. While I don’t think there is much of chance the game will ever make it to another platform, you can’t deny it would be a great title to add to any console. Perhaps PlayStation Home will add a fun farming game to the great library of free to play games on platform. One can dream at least.
1. Minecraft
Minecraft is the most obvious choice for this type of list, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Minecraft has quickly became one of the most played games on Xbox LIVE and has sold millions of copies since it was released only a few short months ago. If the jump from PC to Xbox 360 could be this beneficial for Microsoft, Sony should do everything in its power to bring the insanely popular title to PlayStation Network. Collecting resources to create custom constructions and fighting off creepers would be just as fun with Dualshock, and perhaps, PlayStation could create their version with Move support for even more reasons to purchase the game on a third platform. At least PlayStation 3 owners can take solace in knowing Terraria is coming soon to PlayStation Network as we eagerly await the announcement of more great titles that need to be added to PlayStation Network.
