Serious Sam 3: BFE (Video Game Review)

Serious Sam is one of the gaming world's most underappreciated protagonists. Sam Stone has being kicking butt and blasting his way through enemies for over 10 years now, and a supportive cult following has kept the series running strong with around a dozen releases to bear the Serious Sam name. With Serious Sam 3: BFE, developer Croteam has stuck to their creative guns and produced another great shooter that features classic gameplay with modern, innovative features mixed in for good measure. Old school shooter fans will relish in the outnumbered you against alien mobs feeling, and you'll still find plenty of weapons and competitive modes for those who enjoy to play their shooters online against other players. Serious Sam 3: BFE won't win many awards, but it's really freggin' fun to play.

Serious Sam 3: BFE doesn't feature an intricate storyline, and Sam's brash sense of humor returns to keep spirits high and let you relax as you mow down hordes of ugly monsters. The game takes you to a near future where an alien invasion is imminent and humans have found the long lost secrets of an ancient, but technologically advanced, race known as the Syrians. You play as Sam whose mission as a soldier and protector of Earth from the invading force must find a means to activate a dormant time machine and save the world. The game acts as a prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter, and while you'll find few dramatically intense plot twists and little character development, Sam's humor will keep the laughs coming for the entire length of the game's meaty campaign.

Serious Sam 3: BFE features tons of weapons including classic shotguns and pistols, melee weapons such as a massive sledgehammer and even alien weapons that will evaporate any enemies that dare stand before you. The gameplay is fast and unrelenting, and old school gamers can enjoy the style of play better than anyone. The arcade action is complemented by a variety of hideous aliens and other monsters that you'll mow down in masses. Serious Sam 3: BFE features some graphics outside of character models as well. You'll enjoy shooting your way through a dark, dank cave one moment only to enter a dried out desert or destroyed cityscape in the next missions. All of the action in Serious Sam 3: BFE takes place with a rocking soundtrack playing in the background, and Sam's dialogue and wisecracks will keep you entertained while the supporting characters help set up Sam for some good jokes time and time again. If tackling the game's solo campaign on your own isn't your style, you can even take Serious Sam 3: BFE online cooperatively and experience beating aliens to a pulp with some friends.

Serious Sam 3: BFE notes that perfect doesn't last, but in the case of this game, Serious Sam 3: BFE is as close to perfect a shooter as you'll find on any downloadable marketplace. While the game has been out for a while on PC, there's never been a better time to purchase the game than now with the new release of the Jewel of the Nile DLC. The new expansion adds three new campaign missions to the game set on the Island of Philae and enjoy great multiplayer modes such as classics like Deathmatch and Capture the Flag and more innovative modes like Beast Hunt and My Burden. Serious Sam 3: BFE is a game that all shooter fans should pick up. The exhilarating joyride doesn't let up, and a bevy of game modes will keep you coming back long after you've completed the game's campaign for the first time. Sam is a riot and the shooting action is intensely entertaining. It's time to get Serious about your gaming and pick your copy of Serious Sam 3: BFE today!
