5 Misunderstood Video Game Villains

We often come across all types of villains in video games that we either despise or find annoying. They prevent you from rescuing the damsel in distress, from getting through the level and much more. Today, we will take a look at some of the video game world's most hated villains and why they may have been merely misunderstood this whole time.

5. Bowser (Super Mario Brothers series)
Bowser aka King Koopa has been wrecking havoc on the mushroom kingdom for decades. All Bowser wanted to do was marry his true love Princess Toadstool and rule the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser is hated for things he just can't control--he is in love with a beautiful princess that doesn't want him. The signs of jealousy are all there. Bowser hates Mario because he has been able to lay claim to the only thing he wants within the Mushroom Kingdom. I am sure it takes a toll on a powerful King who gets one-upped by a stocky, short plumber.

4. Ganon (The Legend of Zelda series)
Ganon has been the antagonist of the Zelda series since the very beginning. Ganon stops at nothing to try and steal the Triforce of Power and capture Princess Zelda. In Ganon's case we have someone who is very ambitious and driven. He just wants the power that the triforce can give him and wants a beautiful girl on his arm while he does it. It is only natural for him to hate Link who is trying to take all that away from him. We are basically punishing someone for having a little ambition--really people?

3. Albert Wesker (Resident Evil series)
You may remember Wesker as the fiendish leader of the S.T.A.R.S. team. Albert grew up as an experiment by the Umbrella Corporation and later become an employee of the corporation when he turned 17. He was basically a child of abuse who was overlooked by society. The fact he works as a double agent later and got into many devious acts was inevitable. The way he was used and manipulated by others would only make him act out in the ways he did. Maybe all Albert really needed was a hug...

2. Sub Zero (Mortal Kombat series)
Sub Zero aka Noob Saibot was a member of the Lin Kuei clan. Sub Zero is an assassin warrior who was trained in the ways of evil. This is an example of one individual being turned to the darkside and once there he couldn't return to what he once was. Sub Zero had been betrayed by those he trusted most and caused him to act out in anger against the world. He did what he had to in his eyes to survive--which is a natural human trait.

1. Zombies
Zombies have to be the most misunderstood villains in video game history. The are reanimated from the dead and are rotting versions of their former selves. It is only natural to be a little depressed when you look in the mirror only to see your flesh peeling from your body. What do most people do when they are depressed? They go stuff themselves full of foods they know are bad for them. Zombies want to take away their pain by chowing down on some tasty brains only to have humans telling them they can't. That would be like someone telling you that you couldn't have a cupcake after having the worst day of your life--that is just wrong!

Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo 2026 Returns for Its Biggest Year Yet

Huntsville, Alabama is preparing for one of the state’s biggest celebrations of geek culture as the Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo returns April 17–19, 2026.
