Serious Sam Double D XXL (Video Game Preview)

Serious Sam has been wrecking havoc on invading alien forces for well over 10 years, and if you haven't grown tired of the manly protagonist's foul mouthed shenanigans over the years, you'll be happy to know Sam Stone is returning for another release in only a little over a month from now. Serious Sam Double D XXL will stray from the series' roots by offering a side-scrolling shooter title whose core mechanics aren't unlike older titles such as Super Contra. Serious Sam Double D XXL isn't your typical old school shooter however. Stacking bigger and better guns on top of one another is literally the key to success in this chaotic shooter, and you can bring a friend along in cooperative play for even more fun.

Sam will be battling against the evil hordes of the diabolical Mental throughout different time periods using the power of the Time Lock. Sam will have plenty of new technology at his disposal this time around including the ability to stack guns on top of one another to fire simultaneously on some unfortunate enemies, and a new jump pad will allow Sam to reach heights like never before. On top of that, Sam will have some friends along for the ride with his trusty AI companion by his side and the only human crazy enough to take on the mission with Sam, Dan "Huff" Huffington. Together, the two heroes will take out destructive beacons in different time periods to save the world all while blasting away enemy hordes with unique weapons that include cybernetic bees and chainsaw yo-yos. This is going to be one crazy ride.

Serious Sam Double D XXL will include multiple ways to play including the cooperative campaign, challenge mode and a head-to-head arena. We were able to sit down and try out the first several stages of the campaign, and the game is really fun and one of the best downloadable shooters we've played in months. The shooting is fast paced and frenetic, and options in the game accommodate even faster speeds than the default setting. Serious Sam Double D XXL also includes various sections of platforming and puzzle solving, and while the puzzles are never that difficult and the controls are tight enough for some fun platforming sections, we can't help but find it a bit strange that Sam can jump through stages faster than he can run through on foot.

Serious Sam Double D XXL isn't a pretty game, and some sloppy animations pop up from time to time, but this game is all about shooting crazy alien bastards, finding more ammo and continuing to unload upon your ugly foes. With gun stacking, plenty of weapon upgrades that can be purchased from shops and lots of hidden areas full of loot, Serious Sam Double D XXL is a game that won't win any awards, but it will keep you laughing and shooting along for hours with a buddy. The only drawback here is that the game only supports local cooperative play, so better stock up on chips and soda and call your buddy over for some Serious Sam when the full game releases next month!
