Monsters Invade: Oz (Video Game Review)

Monsters Invade: Oz is the newest release from developer Little Box, who is well known as the creators of the popular Geared series. The three man team of Jo Overline, Bryan Mitchell and Ryan Allen have returned with this all new game that takes plenty of inspirations from both the legendary Pokémon video game series and the classic film The Wizard of Oz. The result is a fun new game that is fun to play even if not all that innovative, plus it's a good game to hold over Pokémaniac until the release of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y later this year.

The game takes players to the magical world of Oz as depicted in the highly popular film and story. Players control a young girl that is transported to the land and has the power to control the monsters found near the Yellow Brick Road to protect her and fight by her side to the end of the road with an eventual showdown with the Wicked Witch. The game features plenty of characters taken straight from the film including the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and even some surprise cameos from characters from other video games. The game's storyline will give players a trip of nostalgia as the traverse the Yellow Brick Road, collecting monsters and battling all the way through the new release.

Monsters Invade: Oz allows the player to begin capturing, battling and evolving monsters soon after loading up the game, and it's difficult to not call the game a Pokémon clone, though there are some major differences. Many of the over 100 monsters in the game are inspired by creatures from The Wizard of Oz, and there are plenty of different items in the game including the item used to capture the monsters. The familiar battle system feel right at home on iOS with touch screen controls making it more simplistic than ever to manage your monsters and call out commands in battles. Much like the newest monsters in the Pokémon series, some of these monsters are completely adorable or look cool, while some will leave you shaking your head wondering what the team at Little Box was thinking when drawing them.

Though Monsters Invade: Oz doesn't come close to the high production and presentation featured in the Pokémon series of late, it's still a good quality game that offers up fun gameplay unlike anything else on the App Store. The game's colorful graphics and cheerful characters work together perfectly with a soundtrack from the same composer that worked on the Scribblenauts series to create an atmosphere that will have you playing for hours on end. Monsters Invade: Oz is one of the most entertaining releases for the App Store in 2013, and there is no reason not to pick up this free game starting today.

Monsters Invade: Oz is now available exclusively for iOS and can be downloaded for free. Monsters Invade: Oz has been rated appropriate for all ages. For more information on the game, check out the official Monsters Invade: Oz website.
