Full Mojo Rampage (Video Game Preview)

Full Mojo Rampage is a new title in development from indie developer Over the Top Games. The game is currently available to play in early access for $19.99 exclusively on Steam, which allows fans to pick up the title and play preview builds of the game and contribute to message boards with the developers to aid in the creation of the game. Paying to play what is essentially a beta may not be for everyone, but players will automatically unlock the full version of the game when it is likely finished in 2014. Full Mojo Rampage early access is currently playable in the Alpha 0.2.83 build of the game, and it's shaping up to be another addictive indie games that is sure to resonate with many PC gamers.

Full Mojo Rampage is a dungeon-crawling action shooter with rogue-like elements. When broken down into its most basic mechanics, Full Mojo Rampage allows players to explore large, randomly generated levels and complete missions in solo or cooperative sessions. Enemies will spawn from the ground and appear from nowhere to attack players, and players will have to defend their voodoo character with powerful energy blasts and magical staffs found scattered throughout maps. Players will increase statistics and find plenty of consumable items and equipment during each playthrough of the game, but all items are reset after the player dies, and worlds must be completed from the beginning once again. It's an addictive formula that incorporates game elements that have been highly successful for games such as Diablo III and The Binding of Isaac over recent years, and these various mechanics combine to make Full Mojo Rampage another great game for fans of these other similar titles.

There are scheduled to be five quests in the final version of Full Mojo Rampage, though in its current state, only one quest is available to play. Each quest is made up of randomly generated levels and six main missions. Beginning a new quest will take players to an overworld map where stages and missions can be chosen. The layout of quests are also randomly generated and can include main missions, bonus missions, shops, shrines and other special levels. At the shop, players can purchase or sell items from their inventory, while shrines will feature one of the many voodoo deities that will give players an unlockable mask, a powerful item or offer some other perk to the player. Since much of the game is still in development, there are problems with some items found in missions or shops, and not all of the items available from shrines are awarded in the game's current state. The random generated content does provide nearly infinite replay value however, and no quest will ever be the same no matter how many times the game is played.



The quests in the game will take players to many different worlds that each hold plenty of hidden secrets, gives players several achievements to unlock to earn additional money and items and features a few boss fights over their duration. The current quest offers two early boss fights that will challenge players to learn their patterns and weaknesses to finish them off. There are two stages between boss fights that are typically themed to swamp, cemetery and other locations associated with voodoo related locations. The level design is strong for the most part, but there is a serious lack of variety in missions that typically task players with finding and closing two portals scattered around the stage before leaving. The mission tasks are related to the story of the quest, so perhaps there will be different types of missions available in the full game to break up the repetitiveness. One other place the game lacks in-game is a poor mini-map system that is often difficult to read and isn't available to view larger to better learn about the player's surroundings.

Characters in Full Mojo Rampage are fully customizable. Players can unlock and choose from various masks to place on their voodoo dolls for aesthetic purposes only. Though characters aren't allowed to keep the items found and earned through quests, players do retain their money and experience points for their characters. Each doll can also equip pins for additional statistical boosts such as additional inventory slots or bonus hit points. Pins can be upgraded with coins earned during missions, and when enough experience points are earned, a character levels and can receive a stat boost determined by the player before beginning a new quest. Finally, each voodoo doll is designated to a specific loa or voodoo deity that grants special moves to characters. Some of the attacks include giant bombs, or players can quickly hit a button to throw down a turret while running away from enemies There are currently three playable character classes, but many will be added to the game when the full version of the game becomes available later down the road.

Full Mojo Rampage is a game that is meant to be taken slowly while players steadily gain a better understanding of the game and make their characters stronger in order to overcome difficult obstacles. The game isn't easy, but after devoting an hour or so to playing the game, the first couple of stages should become a lot easier and progress should be made with each new session. Once the game has been completed in its current mode, the additional masochist mode is unlocked for an even greater challenge. It's also worth noting the game is available in online cooperative play, but enemies attack in larger groups with boosted stats for the amount of additional players added to the game.



Full Mojo Rampage allows up to four players to join together in multiplayer sessions online, and tougher enemies aren't the only thing players will need to worry about. The team will share a pool of lives, and once the pool has been drained, the game ends for everyone, which obviously means a team is only as strong as its weakest link, and unfortunately, trolling players can single handedly ruin a session if they so choose. Luckily, there are online versus modes for up to eight players where annoying players can be met in head to head competition. The game currently supports four game modes that include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, King of Mojo and Capture the Flag. There isn't a large community of gamers that currently play Full Mojo Rampage at the moment, especially in versus multiplayer, but we're assuming each mode is decent fun with friends, although the cooperative experience is the main attraction with this title.

Full Mojo Rampage is a good looking game that supports high graphic quality output in 3D environments. The game features pretty good level design, though finding many of the hidden treasure chests and hidden troves can be difficult in the foggy and strange colored environments at first. The HUD in the current version of the game is likely the weakest spot in Full Mojo Rampage's presentation. The previously mentioned mini-map isn't designed very clearly right now, and the player inventory that runs across the bottom of the screen tends to completely obscure enemies at times while walking through stages. There are some good sound effects in the game, and the main menu theme of the game is great. Full Mojo Rampage also supports good keyboard and mouse controls as well as partial controller support for players that grew up on console gaming.

Full Mojo Rampage is already an incredibly addictive game in its current state, and it will only get better from here. The team at Over the Top Games is currently hard at work getting the game ready for its full release and is working together with the Full Mojo Rampage community to ensure the game meets players' expectations. The game already features plenty of polish that many big name titles simply do not have, and Full Mojo Rampage is still in Alpha! It's very easy to get wrapped up in Full Mojo Rampage for hours on end, so when the full version is released, it may be impossible to put the game down. Plenty of unlockable content and a steady character progression constantly pushes players towards playing just one more game to see what items will be unlocked with the next playthrough and if a nasty boss can finally be conquered. Full Mojo Rampage is a great game that is well worth the price of admission. Check it out with Early Access on Steam today!
