Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion (Video Game Review)

Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is the first release from the new development studio, Casual Brothers. The game features seamless online and offline cooperative multiplayer for up to four players with action platforming gameplay set in a three dimensional world. The game suffers from poor camera controls and a very choppy and unreliable frame rate that slows the action just when the player begins landing massive combination attacks, but it does feature some other good ideas that keep the new release from fading into obscurity. Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion if funny and an entertaining game to play with friends, and at a $9.99 price tag on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade, it's definitely an affordable game that can be enjoyed with friends over a weekend or two.

Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion features four orc warriors as the game's main protagonists, as players take up arms and battle against humans to reclaim their land and save the orc race from going extinct. The story describes orcs as poorly groomed and lazy, which leads to the humans overrunning the magical kingdom with polluting technologies and massive robots while being driven by greed. The toxic runoff infects the orcs and makes them very sick but also gives them powerful gas attacks that can actually be used as a weapon in combat. The orcs have decided to fight back with its few remaining members and take back what is rightfully theirs from the humans so they can go back to bed.

The storyline of Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is humorous but features only a few narrated cutscenes through its duration. A lot of the game's storyline is told through text between missions, after dying and so forth. Players can choose to control one of Friar Krap, Lord Poop, Doc Turd and Sir Sniff during the game, and each comes with a different elemental attack that includes poison burps or flame breath. There are additional unlockable characters throughout the game that can later be used in combat, but they also provide some amusing moments in dialogue early in the game. If you're the type of person that laughs at the thought of farts, poop and other bathroom humor, you're going to have a good time in Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion.

Combat in Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is similar to other games from the action platforming genre. Each character has light and heavy attacks, and as more hits are landed on enemies, experience points are earned, and additional skills and statistic boosts are gained with each new level. Statistics feature pretty standard measurements like strength, defense, agility and mana. Additional weapons can be found throughout the game or by purchasing them in stores for a variety of different types of attacks for the player to use, though they are breakable and will only last for so many successful hits. Masks can also be obtained from boss battles or from stores to give the player additional hit points, bonus experience points, stronger attacks or one of a number of other passive abilities.

Each of the four main characters has a different elemental attack to comes into play by hitting either of the trigger buttons. The left, fart attack can stun nearby enemies or be combined with campfires, fireflies or other players' burps to deal devastating explosive damage to nearby enemies. The right, burp attack is useful for hitting an enemy directly in front of the player with an elemental attack. Another unique feature for the game allows players to play in either Dirty or Magic mode, though the two distinctions aren't made clear in the game. Essentially, Magic removes farts and a few other offensive things in the game and replaces them with magic spells instead. Since one of the main attractions of Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is farting on your friends and enemies, it's a bit bizarre that the feature was even included in the game, and we definitely think it's a lot more entertaining to stink up the joint while farting with a few friends.

While combat in the game is pretty interesting, and their are even some cool features and character designs that includes a noteworthy battle against a mixture of Frost the Snowman and Dr. Jekyll, Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is constantly kept from achieving its full potential by a couple of flaws that includes very poor frame rate during most missions in the game. It's very common to have the game slow down when fighting off large groups of enemies while dealing out some heavy damage to them. The problem is persistent and is impossible to ignore. Chaining together the right combo attacks can be difficult when the game continuously slows down, and it can terribly frustrating to take damage when it was not really the player's fault.

The camera controls featured in Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is just like farts; they stink. Rather than giving players separate cameras that can be controlled and adjusted with the right stick like in most traditional games, Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion features a camera that automatically focuses on what the game deems important and is not always pointing in the direction that is most helpful for the player. It's also not uncommon for the camera to make it impossible for the player to completely walk off screen while the camera focuses on something in the distance. The camera was clearly designed with a shared view in multiplayer, and it does seem to be a bit more reliable when playing with friends, but keeping track of players in the massive amount of enemies that appear with more players is still tougher than it needs to be.

When Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion loads up, the farts start flying and never really let up. The game looks good enough for a downloadable title and level design is passable too. While controlling the game's camera is almost impossible, fighting with characters works well and pulling off a variety of helpful combination attacks is possible in the game. Some combos are good for dealing the most damage quickly to a single target, while heavy attacks are necessary to get through shielded enemies, and some combos perform sweeping attacks to deal damage to large groups of enemies at once.

Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is a fun game to play with up to three other players, and it supports online and offline multiplayer sessions. The entire 25-mission campaign can be completed in just a few hours, but there are holy dolmens to find hidden in each stage as well as additional difficulties to unlock and complete to see all the game has to offer. Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion packs a good amount of content for its price, and if players can look past a couple of glaring flaws, there is a fartastic game to enjoy with friends underneath. Download a copy of Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion today and get your poop on!

Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is now available for PlayStation Network, Xbox LIVE Arcade and PC and can be purchased for $9.99. Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion is rated T by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Crude Humor & Violence. For more information on the game, check out the official Orc Attack: Flatulent Rebellion website.
