NBA 2K14 (Video Game Review)

NBA 2K14 is the newest release for the NBA 2K series from 2K Sports and the first made available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is easily one of the prettiest titles available at launch; players look and move realistic with some player models looking nearly identical to their real life counterparts. The game doesn't just look nice though, and it is a lot of fun to play as well. The new release does leave out the LeBron: Path to Greatness and Association, still included in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases, but players will hardly notice thanks to some new game modes and a highly impressive graphics display that shows of the power of next generation consoles.

NBA 2K14 does away with a couple of well known game modes but replaces them with some new ones. Players will likely spend a large amount of time in the all new MyGM mode that replaces the franchise running Association mode. In MyGM, players will take full control of a team as the acting owner and will perform every task from managing player salaries and hiring coaching staffs to talking to the press and other league owners and GMs. The game mode definitely requires plenty of time and dedication, though a less convoluted version of the mode is available for players looking to run a team without all of the extra content. It is disappointing to not be allowed to go online and play franchise modes with friends in NBA 2K14, but MyGM mostly satisfies those needs.

Once they've had their fill of MyGM mode, players can head over to the MyCareer game mode to experience life in the NBA from the player's perspective. The mode takes players from the ranks of a nobody, through the draft or free agency period, and into a rising star in the league. Players will earn experience for completing tasks and training and can gain boosted statistics to help perform better during games. Players will also experience plenty of cutscenes and other additional content on the next generation versions of NBA 2K14, as the created player interacts with coaches and other players in the league. Some of the scenes sound a bit silly, but it's an overall entertaining experience that fans of NBA 2K14 should greatly enjoy.

NBA 2K14 also sees the return of MyTeam with some tweaks and improvements. Players will still need to purchase booster packs for a chance to pull player cards that can be used to create a team and face off with other players online, but there are now rarer cards and other boost cards added to packs that can truly change the formation and development of a team. The mode is pretty fun for a while, but most players will likely want to stick to playing with the real athletes instead of virtual cardboard.

Presentation is where NBA 2K14 shines on next generation consoles. We've already noted how realistic the game looks, but screenshots and words hardly do the game justice; you really need to play the game yourself to appreciate how good it really looks. Most player models are deadly accurate including some realistic recreations of some of the biggest stars in the sport such as Ray Allen and LeBron James. The game's controls are still just as fluid as ever with most of the action controlled with tilts and spins of the two controller joysticks. The game's soundtrack is also top notch and features some of the most popular songs of today that NBA fans will definitely appreciate.

NBA 2K14 is the best next generation sports title currently available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and sports fans and NBA lovers shouldn't hesitate to pick up the new release. The game is one of the best looking on next generation from any genre or platform, and it's a lot of fun to play in the new MyGM, MyCareer and MyTeam Modes, or players can simply play offline or online with real NBA teams. No matter how you like to enjoy your basketball, NBA 2K14 has you covered. Look for NBA 2K14 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today!

NBA 2K14 is now available from all major retailers for the MSRP of $59.99 and can be purchased for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. NBA 2K14 is rated E by the ESRB. For more information on the game, check out the official NBA 2K14 website.
