Super Mega Baseball (Video Game Review)

Super Mega Baseball is a new arcade baseball simulator from developer Metalhead Software. The game provides a lighter look at the sport with simple controls and addictive gameplay. The game is easy for any sports fan to pick up and play despite their level of expertise in the genre. There are two ways to play in the game, but the lack of any online multiplayer definitely limits the amount of fun players can have with the title. Super Mega Baseball has enough content to make it worth the $19.99 price tag, but players need to have some friends to play with locally to truly enjoy this new indie game.

Super Mega Baseball is an arcade baseball title in the same model of the Hot Shots! golf series. The game does not try to be a true baseball simulator, and the lack of any ties to Major League Baseball allows the game to utilize all sorts of unique ideas not typically seen in the sports genre. The game features plenty of colorful characters and mascots without being overly cheesy in its delivery.

Gameplay in Super Mega Baseball is simple to pick up and play for all gamers. Batting is as easy as pressing the swing button or using the right analog stick on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Pitching is equally easy and simply requires a player to choose a pitch and let it fly. Defense and base running is mostly automated, though there are commands for diving, sliding, jumping and other moves to keep the game somewhat skill based.

Super Mega Baseball offers two ways to play. Exhibition mode allows up to four players to team up and play a quick game. Season mode expands on the game and allows players to choose a team, earn experience points to level up and train a team for temporary stat boosts. Season also allows players to battle for a championship game and manage a team in order to add a whole new layer of depth to the game not seen in Exhibition mode.

Players are allowed to customize teams and players in Super Mega Baseball. There aren't a whole ton of options in the game with only a few faces to select and a limited amount of facial hair and equipment to go along with the default body and team's jersey. Other parts of the game are nearly as bare boned with very simple menus littered throughout the game tracks and commentary that tends to repeat during games.

Super Mega Baseball has enough content to make it worth a download, but the lack of any online multiplayer definitely hurts the experience. The game is fun to play locally despite any problems with the rest of the game's presentation. Options in the game allow players to adjust their Ego from 1 to 99. This setting changes the games difficulty from mind numbingly simple to nearly impossible to win. Players will get better at the game the longer they play the game, and the game can be adjusted to keep the game fun for a long time. Additionally, each player in the game can adjust the setting to make matches more fair despite a difference in player skill.

Super Mega Baseball is a fun arcade baseball game that PlayStation owners will find enjoyable, especially when friends are available to play the game locally. The game has a decent presentation with fun graphics and animations that fit the arcade style game perfectly. The game isn't the best sports game we've played recently, but there is enough content included in the game to make it worth a purchase despite the lack of an online multiplayer mode. Super Mega Baseball is ready to play ball on PlayStation Network today.

Super Mega Baseball is now available for the MSRP of $19.99 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. Super Mega Baseball is rated E by the ESRB for Alcohol and Tobacco Reference. For more information on the game, check out the official Super Mega Baseball website.
