Iron Magicians: The Search for the Magic Crystals Now Available

Quirk Books has announced the release of Iron Magicians: The Search for the Magic Crystals.

From charming fairy tale creatures and clever puzzles to brave knights and challenging quests, Quirk Books’ innovative Comic Quests series combines the experience of reading a comic book with the excitement of playing a solo role-playing game. Full of adventure, magic, and fun, each installment of this interactive series allows middle grade readers to pick their own path and become the hero of their own story.

In Iron Magicians: The Search for the Magic Crystals (Quirk Books; August 6, 2019; ages 8–12), the latest book in the series, young readers enter a brand-new world of magic, mystery, and adventure, set in an alternative version of Paris at the turn of the twentieth century. The Eiffel Tower, built to protect Paris against magical attacks, is nearing completion, but there’s a shortage of the magic crystals that power the structure. Playing as either a boy or a girl—each with their own strengths—readers are assigned a mission by the famed architect Gustave Eiffel. The quest is simple: find enough magic crystals to power the Eiffel Tower before it’s unveiled at the upcoming World’s Fair.

Along the way, readers can explore the streets of nineteenth-century steampunk Paris, solve a sinister mystery in the Louvre, and stop spies from stealing secrets at a magical weapons factory, all while gathering clues, answering riddles, casting spells, and combatting enemies.

Here’s how to play:

  • Select a character and begin the quest.
  • Numbers are hidden in every panel. Decide where to go next, and then flip to the panel with the matching number.
  • Solve puzzles, cast spells, and defeat enemies to succeed in your quest. Only after players have collected all the crystals will their journey be complete.
  • Spin the Wheel of Destiny to battle spies and other enemies. A spellbook, character inventory, compass, or map of Paris will help along the journey.
  • If the mission is a failure, readers start again from the beginning. The book can be played again and again!

Featuring detailed artwork, charming characters, and engaging challenges, Iron Magicians: The Search for the Magic Crystals is perfect for fans of the Amulet series, video game lovers, and young readers looking for their next great adventure. And with countless paths and choices to make along the way, Iron Magicians can be read—and played!—again and again.

Buffet Bliss or Southern Swing-and-a-Miss? A Bite at Kacey’s in Huntsville

Walk through the doors of Kacey’s Country Cooking in Huntsville and you’re greeted by the comforting smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread that could double as perfume for any true Southerner. This is where the buffet line reigns supreme, the sweet tea flows endlessly, and dessert is always just an arm’s reach away. For many locals, Kacey’s is a comfort food paradise. Fans brag about the fried green tomatoes, juicy pork chops, slow-cooked beef tips, and banana pudding that deserves its own holiday. The staff are another highlight—quick with refills, friendly enough to feel like family, and the kind of people who can make a buffet feel like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. But Kacey’s has its critics too. Some diners rave about “the best bang for your buck in town,” while others complain that the food sometimes veers into “straight-from-the-can” territory. Like most buffets, it’s a roll of the dice: hit the line on a good day and you’ll be full and happy; catch it on an...
