Video Game Review: Dead Cells: Return To Castlevania - Xbox One

Dead Cells has always thrived on precision, speed, and an almost cruel devotion to player mastery, and the Return to Castlevania expansion feels like a natural evolution of everything the game does best. Rather than feeling like a superficial crossover, this DLC embraces the spirit of Castlevania so fully that it feels woven into the DNA of Dead Cells itself.

From the moment you step into Castle Dracula, the tone shifts. The bright, grimy chaos of Dead Cells gives way to gothic arches, moonlit towers, and ominous corridors soaked in atmosphere. The expansion immediately signals that this is not just another biome, but a love letter to one of the most influential action-platformer series of all time.

The narrative hook is simple but effective. Players are drawn into a familiar tale of evil resurrected, with Dracula once again threatening the world. While Dead Cells has never leaned heavily on storytelling, Return to Castlevania uses its premise to provide context and motivation without slowing down the game’s trademark momentum.

One of the most exciting twists is the inclusion of iconic Castlevania characters. Simon Belmont takes center stage, lending his legendary presence to the experience. His role feels respectful and authentic, capturing the essence of a classic hero while fitting seamlessly into Dead Cells’ fast-paced framework.

Combat remains the beating heart of the experience, and the new enemies demand attention and adaptability. Medusa heads drift unpredictably across the screen, skeletons hurl bones with malicious timing, and armored knights punish reckless aggression. Each enemy feels lifted directly from Castlevania lore but reimagined through Dead Cells’ razor-sharp combat design.

The addition of classic Castlevania-inspired weapons is where the expansion truly shines. Simon’s iconic whip feels incredible to wield, offering reach, crowd control, and a nostalgic thrill that never wears thin. Other weapons, from throwing crosses to mystical sub-weapons, expand the arsenal in meaningful ways.

What makes these weapons special is how well they integrate into existing builds. They are not novelty items but viable tools that encourage experimentation. Mixing classic Belmont gear with Dead Cells’ original mutations and skills creates exciting hybrid playstyles.

Level design in Return to Castlevania is both familiar and fresh. The castle is filled with branching paths, hidden chambers, and environmental hazards that reward curiosity. Exploration feels purposeful, echoing the best moments of classic Metroidvania design.

The bite-sized challenge areas are a smart addition, offering short bursts of intense action that break up longer runs. These sections provide valuable resources and upgrades while maintaining the game’s relentless pacing. They feel optional yet rewarding, encouraging players to push themselves further.

Boss encounters are another standout. These fights capture the theatrical intensity Castlevania is known for, combining pattern recognition with punishing damage. Victory feels earned, not given, reinforcing Dead Cells’ philosophy of skill-based progression.

The fluidity of combat remains unmatched. Dodges, parries, and attacks flow together with surgical precision, making even repeated deaths feel like lessons rather than setbacks. The expansion never compromises this core strength.

Visually, the pixel art is stunning. Gothic backdrops, flickering torches, and grotesque enemy designs create an atmosphere dripping with dread and nostalgia. The attention to detail makes every screen feel handcrafted.

The soundtrack further elevates the experience. Classic Castlevania-inspired melodies blend seamlessly with Dead Cells’ modern soundscape, creating music that feels both familiar and new. It’s the kind of score that pushes you forward even when defeat seems inevitable.

Difficulty remains high, but it is fair. The expansion respects the player’s intelligence, offering challenges that can be overcome through practice and smart decision-making. Newcomers may struggle, but veterans will feel right at home.

Replayability is as strong as ever. Multiple routes, weapon combinations, and enemy placements ensure that no two runs feel identical. The crossover elements add variety without disrupting the core loop that fans love.

What truly sets Return to Castlevania apart is its respect for both franchises. It never feels like Dead Cells wearing a Castlevania costume; instead, it feels like a genuine collaboration born from shared design philosophies.

The undead protagonist of Dead Cells fits surprisingly well into Dracula’s domain. His relentless resilience mirrors the endurance required to conquer such a cursed place, reinforcing the thematic synergy between the two worlds.

Switching weapons and abilities on the fly becomes even more satisfying in this expansion. The increased enemy variety demands quick thinking, rewarding players who can adapt mid-combat without hesitation.

Exploration remains deeply rewarding. Hidden relics, secret rooms, and powerful upgrades await those willing to take risks. Every discovery feels like a small victory against the castle’s oppressive presence.

By the time the credits roll, it’s clear that Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania is more than just an expansion. It’s a celebration of action-platforming history that manages to honor the past while pushing forward.

Whether you are a longtime Castlevania fan or a devoted Dead Cells veteran, this expansion delivers an experience that is challenging, stylish, and deeply satisfying from start to finish.
