Skylanders Crayola Color Alive (Book Review)

The Skylanders franchise has expanded with the upcoming release of Skylanders inspired Crayola Color Alive coloring books. Fans of the Skylanders series will love these new books that feature some of the most popular Skylanders characters that can be colored and brought to life in four dimensions with augmented reality. The 4D effect allows fans to interact with their creations in ways never before available, and special effect crayons allow the artist the ability to add cool animations to their characters to make the creation truly their own.

Color Alive books from Crayola allows fans to bring to life their favorite characters from black and white drawings and color from Crayola brand crayons. The new Skylanders release continues that with 16 pages and fan favorite characters including Chop Chop, Flashwing, Kaos and new Skylanders Trap Team heroes such as Snapshot and Food Fight. Using the Color Alive book is as simple as purchasing the book and crayons combo pack in stores and downloading the free app for iOS, Android or Windows devices. Fans then color their character, or not, scan the picture and begin interacting with the character on the second screen. The characters have a couple of animations, though we wish there were more, and they can be moved around, have their size adjusted, have their picture taken or be saved to interact with at a later time.

The Skylanders Crayola Color Alive book comes with seven crayons total including an Ice Blast special effect crayon. This crayon can be activated after coloring a picture with the Color Alive app to add ice crystals to the character where drawn. Additionally, fans can use other Color Alive special effect crayons to add Showstopper, Pixie Dust and Fire Breath effects to the drawings as well. One neat idea for owners of the book is to make copies and make several different colored variants of their favorite Skylanders characters. It's also worth noting that the pictures can be scanned before coloring to make white crystal characters in full 4D, so fans can help decide what they want to color their picture before ever touching the crayon to a page.

Skylanders Crayola Color Alive is a great way for fans of the Skylanders series to show off their imagination and create custom versions of their favorite characters to their friends. We really enjoyed how simple it was to scan the images, and the attention to detail in colors in the 4D was astounding. The characters are pre-rendered for the app, so fans can't simply add custom parts to their characters with a black pen though. Skylanders Crayola Color Alive offers fans a cheap way to have more fun with their favorite video game characters, and it gives parents the satisfaction of knowing their kids are using their imagination for more than just playing video games. Look for Skylanders Crayola Color Alive in stores now!

Skylanders Crayola Color Alive is now available from all major retailers for the MSRP of $6.49. For more information on the book, check out the official Skylanders Crayola Color Alive website.

Buffet Bliss or Southern Swing-and-a-Miss? A Bite at Kacey’s in Huntsville

Walk through the doors of Kacey’s Country Cooking in Huntsville and you’re greeted by the comforting smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread that could double as perfume for any true Southerner. This is where the buffet line reigns supreme, the sweet tea flows endlessly, and dessert is always just an arm’s reach away. For many locals, Kacey’s is a comfort food paradise. Fans brag about the fried green tomatoes, juicy pork chops, slow-cooked beef tips, and banana pudding that deserves its own holiday. The staff are another highlight—quick with refills, friendly enough to feel like family, and the kind of people who can make a buffet feel like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. But Kacey’s has its critics too. Some diners rave about “the best bang for your buck in town,” while others complain that the food sometimes veers into “straight-from-the-can” territory. Like most buffets, it’s a roll of the dice: hit the line on a good day and you’ll be full and happy; catch it on an...
