Fallen Tear: The Ascension - Explore a mythic land, learn new skills, and recruit allies… every friendship reshapes the fight against the ancient gods. (Game Review)

I found myself on a mossy ledge, the cold wind nipping at my skin, before rushing into a room buzzing with tension. Fallen Tear: The Ascension delivers a raw, hand-drawn experience… quick combat, expansive exploration, and a party system full of unexpected twists!

You’re a kid carrying a heavy destiny, surrounded by a crew of clever, sharp-witted friends.

You take on the role of Hira, a child destined to face ancient gods. The mission sounds straightforward: explore Raoah, pick up new skills, and push back the creeping darkness. But what really pulls you in are the connections you build… each ally you meet changes not just your fighting style, but how the world unfolds around you.

This game blends Metroidvania exploration with the heart of a JRPG. You’ll find tight platforming, precise parrying, and a lineup of allies to recruit and slot into your combat team. Most of your time is spent navigating interconnected areas, mastering traversal moves, and experimenting with party combos in battles and boss fights.

Run, battle, gather allies… and then do it all over with new skills in hand!

Every playthrough is about exploring and adjusting. You move through an area, discover a new skill or ally, then use that to unlock hidden paths. Combat breaks up the exploration… parry, dodge, and strike back. Boss fights keep you on your toes, making you switch tactics and allies quickly.

The game’s core is movement, timing, and the bonds you build. Movement feels smooth, pogo attacks and diagonal thrusts flow into your traversal. Timing is key: parries create openings, dodges save you from danger, and swapping weapons changes your pace. The Fated Bonds system adds a unique layer: allies provide passive and active perks that affect both combat and movement, so your team setup shapes how you tackle each area.

The challenge strikes a balance between welcoming and tough. Early battles help you find the rhythm. Later bosses demand precision and fast switching. Mastering the game means reading enemy moves, blending movement with attacks, and crafting bond combos that help you overcome or outsmart obstacles.

Hand-drawn art that feels alive, like sketches brought to life on the page.

The art is rich and hand-drawn, with characters that move with real weight and subtle details. The backgrounds are layered, inviting you to discover hidden secrets.

Swords clash, breaths catch, and the music rises just when it should. The voice acting brings the allies to life and makes the story moments hit home.

Visuals and sound are designed to catch your eye and ear. Animations give clear hints before attacks, the music builds the mood, and the world encourages you to explore without feeling lost.

A solo journey designed for sharing discoveries with others.

Fallen Tear is a single-player experience, but the community thrives on sharing tips, posting clips of tough boss fights, and debating which bond combos are overpowered or genius.

There’s plenty to keep you coming back: a variety of allies to recruit, optional bosses to challenge, and a sprawling map filled with hidden paths. The Fated Bonds system makes each playthrough feel fresh, as mixing different allies changes how combat plays out and opens new ways to explore. Since it’s in Early Access, there’s a good chance more content will be added, boosting replay value even further.

Fallen Tear: The Ascension is a bold, hand-drawn Metroidvania that mixes deep JRPG party mechanics with sharp, responsive action.

It gets movement and combat rhythm just right, with the bond system bringing real, meaningful choices. The map can be a bit confusing sometimes, and Early Access shows some rough spots, but the heart of the game is solid. If you enjoy precise combat, deep exploration, and switching allies on the fly, this one will stay with you.
