The Art of Dead Space (Art Book and Comic Review)

The Dead Space is a deep and immersive science fiction world that now encompasses three main video game releases, movies and several graphic novels. The universe of Dead Space is quickly becoming one of the most popular for a video game, and it continues to grow with each new release. While most gamers have probably already picked up their copy of Dead Space 3 that released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 5, 2013, fans will be interested in learning more about the history of Dead Space and learn more about the new game's second protagonist, John Carver. There are several publications that all well worth picking up to learn more about the series including The Art of Dead Space that takes a close look at the origins of space travel, Necromorphs and more through video game and comic concept art. You can also check out the older Dead Space and Dead Space: Salvage to learn more about the game's storyline or even check out the brand new Dead Space: Liberation that released on the same day as Dead Space 3 to learn more about the origins of Sergeant John Carver from the new game.

Though many of the books in the new collection are older titles, Titan Books publishing has re-released the titles in their new form just in time for the release of Dead Space 3. In Dead Space, you'll learn about the origins of the games' storyline leading up the the first game release as humans come across The Marker for the first time ever, and the two protagonists Sergeant Abraham Neumann and Detective Vera Cortez discover one of the first recorded Necromorph attacks that is sure to not be the last. As things continue getting stranger for Cortez and Neumann, the duo begin unraveling a large conspiracy and government cover up that may contain the original history of mankind. The Dead Space book contains seven issues of the original comic series and over 160 pages of content that is important for any fan of the Dead Space series to pick up and read to fully understand the games' storylines.

Dead Space: Salvage is a graphic novel that was originally released back in 2010 but has also received a new release alongside the launch of Dead Space 3. The graphic novel marked the first pairing of author Antony Johnston and artist Christopher Shy in a storyline set between the original Dead Space and Dead Space 2. This book follows a few different characters including Captain Benedykt Malyech, leader of a Magpie group, who is on a mission to collect supplies from around the galaxy while having recurring nightmares about Necromorphs, and a few different characters are shown as well including the Earth's government officials who are in search of The Marker. The book is a good read that keeps you guessing about the fate of the characters with the turn of every page, but little is resolved by the end of the book meaning this isn't a book for everyone.

A teaser trailer for Dead Space: Liberation was revealed early last year and somewhat provided a sneak peak at what everyone assumed would eventually be a Dead Space 3 reveal. Although fans were right about eventual announcement of Dead Space 3, Dead Space: Liberation is a story that shouldn't be overlooked, as it provides plenty of insight into the new protagonist Sergeant John Carver and how he ended up in the mental state the hero presents in the new game. The story follows Carver and Necromorph survivor Ellie Langford and Captain Robert Norton on a quest to free a captured Marker site, where Carver's family is trapped, and uncover secrets of the Necromorphs and mankind. Unlike its predecessor, Dead Space: Liberation is a great read where plenty of information is revealed that is crucial to the storyline of the Dead Space series that all fans should pick up and read for themselves.

The Art of Dead Space
probably doesn't need an explanation for you to understand what it's all about, but it's definitely worth pointing out some key aspects of the art book. There are over 190 pages in the book that contain concept art and drawings for the entire Dead Space video game series including Dead Space: Extraction and Dead Space: Ignition, sketches and artwork from the Christopher Shy graphic novels detailed above, a special foreword from Dead Space 3 Creative Director Ben Wanat and more. The book itself is of incredibly high quality, is hard bound with glossy finished pages and comes packed in a special box with some awesome art of its own. The Art of Dead Space is a bit on the pricey side at the retail price of $34.95, but the collector's item is only available to a limited 1,000 copies making it a must own for the diehard Dead Space fans.
