Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken (Book Review)

Choose your adventure novels are a unique premise that allows readers to play a part in the direction of a storyline, and the paths chosen can often lead to the death of other characters in the tale or even the demise of the story's main protagonist. Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken is a new novel that borrows heavily for the special genre while giving readers a collection of stories inspired by the hit CW television series that follows the heroic adventures of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester as they battle against all the things that go bump in the night. The new book presents several different storylines that play out over different parts of the series and allows fans to step into the shoes of the duo and make all of the decisions the brothers would typically make over the course of an episode with plenty of repercussions for the choices made.

Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken comes from author Tim Waggoner, who has made a name for himself over the years with various tales taken from the horror and science fiction genres. One of his most recent works was Supernatural: Carved in Flesh that featured a grand storyline about the same characters when then encounter a new case where a killer dog is only the beginning of a much bigger threat to a small Ohio town. Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken features the same tones and style of writing Waggoner has been known for in the past, and he seems right at home writing several shorter stories for the collection featured in the book this time around as he did when writing a longer Supernatural novel in his earlier work.

Fans will enjoy Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken for its accuracy when compared with the television series that inspires the stories. There are four stories in total, and each seem to take place during a different time throughout the entire series. There are multiple endings for each of the different storylines in the book, and the reader's choices are vital in determining the outcome of each of them. Not only does this make reading each storyline fun the first time around to see how the story turns out and then compare with friends, but readers will want to go back and reread the entire book to see how different choices dramatically impact how the story could have ultimately finished. This type of writing is rarely seen outside of works designed for younger readers, but Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken can easily be enjoyed fans of any age or reading ability.

Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken features many of the best characters from the series beyond Sam and Dean Winchester. Many times throughout each story, the boys will find themselves in a jam and will be best served looking for advice from their father figure and fellow hunter, Bobby Singer. Fans will also choose how Sam and Dean react to certain situations that may require the two to split up or how they interact with important investigations. This can allow the reader to choose anything from what important questions to ask suspects and victims to deciding what job profession to use when approaching someone for questioning. Of course, there are plent of demons, ghosts, ghouls and spirits that the brothers will come up against in the stories, and it definitely helps if the reader knows to attack ghosts with salt or to burn the bones to permanently kill a ghost like is constantly referenced in the show.

Supernatural: The Roads Not Taken is a good read for fans of the Supernatural television series or for fans of the horror and supernatural genres. The collection offers four distinct tales that definitely make the reader feel smart for being well versed in the series, but it's not required to enjoy each tale. Readers will get their money's worth with the new title when reading back through each story to see how the different choices available changes how the story ultimately ends. Fans of the series will enjoy Tim Waggoner's attention to detail in recreating the world of Supernatural in book form, but the book is so well-written that readers don't need to know everything about the show to have a good time with this story collection.
