The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow (Book Review)

The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow released last month to coincide with the launch of Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The new game is the third and final release in the series from developer MercurySteam, and fans were in for a surprise in the new game that allowed fans to play as Dracula for the first time ever and experience a Castlevania game from the opposite perspective of other releases for the franchise. With The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Titan Books is offering fans a chance to relive and take a close look at some of the iconic locations, characters and enemies that made up the worlds of the entire Castlevania Lords of Shadow trilogy with some never before seen footage and bonus commentary from the development team behind the game. The new book is a good read for casual fans of the Castlevania and an easy purchase for gamers that can't get enough of the MercurySteam series.

The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow covers 192 pages of content from Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate and Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2. Fans will find plenty of interesting content throughout the book. Of course, there is plenty of great artwork captured from the game including the massive castle the franchise is named for, the city surrounding the castle and its inhabitants. Fans will also get a chance to hear plenty of commentary from members of MercurySteam, as they introduce new pieces of artwork and give some behind the scenes information on the development of the series. While it's no doubt sad to see the developer leave the series so soon, The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow offers fans one last chance to hear from the team that helped make the last few years in the action video game genre one of the most exciting periods ever.

In addition to some in-depth looks at the characters and environments featured throughout the series, fans will also find some other real cool content within the pages of The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow. The book features concept art and other images from the early development periods of the game that give clues as to how final models came to be. The book also features a detailed bestiary that gives plenty of images and details on the monsters encountered throughout the game as well as some key items for completing the games. The content isn't exactly enough to double as a strategy guide for overcoming these enemies in the game, but it does offer some additional insight on the characters that will make encountering these foes feel much different the next time around. The book also takes an extensive look at the Belmont clan with plenty of details and information from the entire franchise that any gamer will likely be interested in reading.

Titan Books did something really cool with the release of The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow. Fans that purchase a copy of The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow will have a chance to nab one of 500 limited edition covers featuring concept art from Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 signed by the original artist of the work. It may be too late to act on this offer by the time the review is being read, but there is still plenty of great content featured in the pages of The Art of Castlevania Lords of Shadow to make it well worth purchasing for fans of this great action franchise.
