Duelyst (Video Game Review)

Counterplay Games has released Duelyst for free on PC and Mac.

Duelyst
is a collectible card game that takes place on a tactical, fast-paced battlefield. The matches in Duelyst takes around five to ten minutes to complete and require players to make thoughtful and tactful decisions.

Duelyst contains over 330 cards and 6 factions with the ability to test your skills against other like-minded gamers in ranked season ladder and draft mode tournaments. The art and game environments are beautifully designed and help to fully immerse players into the world of Duelyst.

The combat in Duelyst is a turn-based strategic system with players decking it out for control of the battlefield. Gamers will need to focus on utilizing their best collectible cards in tactical combat while building a powerful deck in 1v1 ranked ladder play.

Gameplay in Duelyst is very simple and requires you to reduce the General's health to zero. There are three card types: Minions, Spells and Artifacts. Your creatures attack the enemy and can move up to two spaces in any direction, with spells having one-time effects that are tied to their faction. Your General also has the ability to equip three artifacts on the battlefield to increase their chances of success in battle.

Duelyst consists of six factions with each one having their own unique characteristics and abilities. The factions  include: Lyonar Kingdoms, Songhai Empire, Vetruvian Imperium, Abyssian Host, Magmar Aspects, and Vanar Kindred.

Duelyst offers a wide array of game modes with Practice Mode allowing you to practice your skills before heading out into battle with other players. As you get better and more successful at the game, you will climb the Season Ladder with five divisions that allow you to earn prizes at the end of the season. Other modes in Duelyst are the Solo Challenges (puzzle-like scenarios where have to defeat opponent in one turn) and The Gauntlet (where you draft cards and try to survive as long as you can).

All of this content combined with over 40 Lore chapters makes Duelyst a great game to play with friends for hours on end. The game has truly been designed to make it accessible to all kinds of players, whether casual or competitive. If you have been looking for a fun collectible card game with a wide variety of game modes, then look no further than Duelyst. What begins as a satisfying loop of weighing parcels and matching stamps soon becomes a game of attention: letters hide hints, patrons’ small talk slips into unsettling confessions, and management’s insistence that you never leave the premises reads less like policy and more like a warning. The demo covers your first four days on the job, teaching the systems while nudging you toward choices, obey protocol and keep the peace, or pry at the seams and uncover the post office’s darker purpose. Either way, those first shifts are a careful, uncanny invitat...
