Steamers and Dreamers Festival: Taste the Steam, Chase the Dream

Steampunk Alabama welcomes everyone to Steamers and Dreamers in Downtown Scottsboro on Saturday, October 25 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM; a free, family‑friendly festival where Victorian curiosity collides with gears, gadgets, and carnival spectacle. Stroll the historic courthouse square at 102 East Laurel Street to find live music, interactive curiosities and demonstrations, costumed roving performers, eccentric vendors and makers, local authors signing books, tempting food trucks, lively contests, and hands‑on activities for all ages that celebrate imagination, craftsmanship, and playful invention.

What to Expect

Live music and performances: Depot 41 and Hank Utter deliver high‑energy sets between theatrical interludes, acrobatic stilt walkers from County Road Haunts, and the ever‑popular talent contest that brings surprises and community cheer.

Vendors and makers: Explore stalls of clockwork curios, leather and brass haberdashery, artisan soaps, Reddog Crafts tabletop treasures, and one‑of‑a‑kind steampunk apparel and keepsakes perfect for gifts or costume finishing touches.

Authors and storytelling: Meet steampunk authors Paul Edward Turner and Phillip Ligon, browse new releases and signed editions, and catch short readings or story talks that spark imagination.

Food and treats: Sample a full festival menu from savory food‑truck fare to funnel cakes and carnival sweets, plus craft beverages and playful options like dirty soda to keep you fueled.

Interactive fun: Test ride whimsical steampunk bicycles and tricycles, enter free vendor‑sponsored contests with prizes, join hands‑on demos, and enjoy activities designed for attendees ages 10 to 71 and beyond.

Community and Purpose

Steampunk Alabama is a grassroots collective of roughly 15 passionate makers and performers who produce year‑round gatherings; picnics, photo shoots, train rides, quoket tournaments; and pour their creativity into a beloved, carnival‑style centerpiece: Steamers & Dreamers. The group built the event to be truly inclusive: admission is always free, many activities and contests award vendor‑sponsored prizes, and visitors can leave with souvenirs or memories without spending a dime. Family oriented and ever‑evolving, the festival grows each season with new acts, vendors, and surprises while staying rooted in community, craftsmanship, and playful Victorian‑inspired invention.

Buffet Bliss or Southern Swing-and-a-Miss? A Bite at Kacey’s in Huntsville

Walk through the doors of Kacey’s Country Cooking in Huntsville and you’re greeted by the comforting smell of fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread that could double as perfume for any true Southerner. This is where the buffet line reigns supreme, the sweet tea flows endlessly, and dessert is always just an arm’s reach away. For many locals, Kacey’s is a comfort food paradise. Fans brag about the fried green tomatoes, juicy pork chops, slow-cooked beef tips, and banana pudding that deserves its own holiday. The staff are another highlight—quick with refills, friendly enough to feel like family, and the kind of people who can make a buffet feel like Sunday dinner at grandma’s. But Kacey’s has its critics too. Some diners rave about “the best bang for your buck in town,” while others complain that the food sometimes veers into “straight-from-the-can” territory. Like most buffets, it’s a roll of the dice: hit the line on a good day and you’ll be full and happy; catch it on an...
