ARK: Survival Ascended Unleashes Massive Astraeos Mega Update Featuring Hydra Boss and Mobile Fortress (Game News)

Studio Wildcard has released the long-awaited Astraeos Mega Update introducing the largest expansion yet to the myth-inspired Astraeos map. The update is available now across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Games Store, and Steam.

The new content debuted during IGN Fan Fest, where the first gameplay trailer showcased Astraeos’ sprawling new desert region and its formidable endgame threats.

The Pyranthos Wasteland: A Harsh New Frontier

At the center of the update is Pyranthos, a vast desert landmass carved from myth and ruin. Shifting sands conceal ancient structures, buried pathways, and artifact-filled caves, while powerful creatures stalk both the surface and underground depths.

Designed as a high-risk, high-reward biome, Pyranthos emphasizes environmental pressure and tactical preparation. Survivors who underestimate its hostile terrain will quickly find themselves overwhelmed.

The Grand Tortugar: A Living War Machine

To withstand the dangers of Pyranthos, players gain access to the Grand Tortugar — a colossal, amphibious living fortress.

More than a mount, the Grand Tortugar functions as a mobile command platform. Survivors can:

  • Traverse both land and ocean floor
  • Harvest valuable resources
  • Open its armored carapace to deploy a roaming base
  • Seal it shut to transform into a near-impenetrable defensive bastion

The design reinforces Astraeos’ mythic Greek inspiration while expanding base-building and siege strategies within the ARK ecosystem.

The Five-Headed Hydra: Astraeos’ Deadliest Encounter

Deep within Pyranthos’ ruins awaits Astraeos’ most formidable challenge yet: a five-headed Hydra boss encounter.

The fight introduces dynamic combat mechanics. Severing individual heads alters attack patterns and pacing, forcing coordinated teamwork and sustained firepower. The encounter is structured to punish disorganized groups while rewarding synchronized strategy and resource management.

From Community Mod to Major Expansion

Originally launched as a community mod by acclaimed creator Nekatus before becoming an Official Partner DLC, Astraeos has steadily evolved with new creatures, cosmetics, bosses, and mythological gameplay elements. The Astraeos Mega Update represents the largest expansion to the map since its debut.

To celebrate the release, the Astraeos map is currently available at a 67% discount on Steam and Xbox, priced at $4.94 USD — the steepest discount offered.

Players create a Survivor, form tribes, and tame, breed, and ride dinosaurs within a dynamic ecosystem that continues to evolve through ongoing updates.

Since its original debut as ARK: Survival Evolved in 2015, Studio Wildcard has expanded the franchise into a transmedia universe spanning spin-off titles and the animated series.

With the Astraeos Mega Update, the studio reinforces its commitment to myth-infused survival gameplay, layering large-scale cooperative boss design and mobile fortress mechanics into one of its most ambitious expansions yet.
