Starfield Free Lanes Update and Terran Armada DLC (Game News)

April 7 marks an exciting milestone for Starfield. The biggest free update yet, Free Lanes, launches alongside the new paid story DLC, Terran Armada. Together, they overhaul travel, progression, customization, outposts, and late-game systems, while introducing a repeatable, loot-focused narrative expansion. This update also brings Starfield to PlayStation 5, welcoming a fresh wave of players to the Settled Systems.

Free Lanes at a glance

Free Lanes and Cruise Mode change how you travel within a star system. Now you can fly freely between planets, giving you more control over your journey. Cruise Mode lets you stay aboard your ship while you travel… decorate your space, use workbenches, chat with companions, and explore dynamic points of interest without instantly jumping to your destination. Plus, new space encounters have been added and happen more often, making exploration feel livelier and more exciting.

X-Tech and deeper customization bring a new resource that lets you reroll and choose legendary effects, unlock a new Tier 4 legendary rank for weapons and gear, and apply powerful upgrades to make items Exotic at max rank. You can also install a Ship Optimization Terminal on your ship to fine-tune shields, engines, weapons, and grav drives while cruising.

Outposts and quality-of-life improvements include a Shared Outpost Container that syncs resources between your bases, a new Database that gathers discovered locations, recipes, and resources, and a Milliewhale outpost pet that adds some personality. The update also adds new ship modules, upgrade slots, planetary points of interest, camera and photomode features, and enemy modifiers, rounding out a wide range of enhancements.

Terran Armada DLC highlights

Terran Armada brings a militarized group of colonists who see themselves as Earth’s rightful heirs. The DLC adds a fresh questline to the Settled Systems and introduces Delta, a reprogrammed Terran robot companion with a complex, morally gray personality.

Incursions are repeatable, map-wide events that can pop up almost anywhere. They range from small skirmishes to large-scale infiltrations and show up on the starmap, letting you decide whether to jump in or steer clear. These encounters offer loot and schematics, with some tied to the main story and others serving as optional challenges.

New ships, modules, and gear bring a practical, tactical vibe inspired by NASA designs. Terran schematics include double-decker habitats, new cockpits, and structural parts, along with military-style suits and weapons. The DLC also adds pre-built outpost modules, fresh decorative items, and more Elite Crew options, including a ModelG mini-bot.

Who benefits most

  • If you love exploring and role-playing, Cruise Mode, new points of interest, and the chance to live aboard and customize your ship while traveling will be right up your alley.

  • For those who enjoy fine-tuning gear and progression, X-Tech, Tier 4 legendaries, Exotic upgrades, and ship optimization offer plenty of depth.

  • Players looking for repeatable endgame challenges can dive into Incursions and Terran loot loops to collect schematics and modules.

  • And new players on PlayStation 5 can jump in from day one and experience all the expanded systems firsthand.

Final Takeaway

Free Lanes is a big update that brings the Settled Systems to life, making travel between destinations more engaging and fun. Terran Armada adds a gripping new story and plenty of repeatable content to keep you busy. Together, they deepen the experience of living aboard your ship and add more layers to late-game progression, a solid upgrade for captains looking for more to explore and achieve.
