Borderlands is the game that shaped the future of the shooting genre when it was released back in 2009, and since then, numerous first-person shooters have adapted some of the unique choices used in Borderlands and even tried to imitate the cooperative gameplay, tons of loot and other unique game mechanics featured in Borderlands, but none have been able to capture the magic of what made this game one of the best of this generation. Since 2009, four expansions have been added to the Borderlands universe, and you can find each of the highly acclaimed downloadable content packs inside of the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition.
In the original Borderlands, you take control of one of four loot hunters in search of the legendary Vault of Pandora. The gang will meet a diverse cast of characters on their journey and do battle with a variety of monsters to clear missions and unlock information that will put them one step closer to their ultimate goal. The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned was the game's first expansion that sent our heroes to Jakob's Cove in order to investigate the strange area while fighting off zombies and Wereskags all while finding more loot of course! Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot was next for Borderlands, and this DLC added new arenas where players could compete against tough foes with a variety of challenges. The Secret Armory of General Knoxx added a new antagonist named Atlas and gave players a new level cap of 61, plenty of new weapons, tough new enemies to battle and a great new storyline to experience. The last of the four DLC expansions was Claptrap's New Robot Revolution, and it pitted our group against a rogue group of Claptraps on a mission to destroy all humans. Each of the game's four expansions adds something great to an already amazing title and makes Borderlands Game of the Year Edition a must own for any gamer.
If you've somehow managed to not play Borderlands at all over the past three years, you should know the game is all about killing enemies, completing missions for experience points and earning more loot. The game features an amazing array of weaponry that ensures you will never find the same exact gun twice. Although the game is a first-person shooter, it relies heavily on RPG mechanics for strengthening your character through class based skill trees and skill points unlocked by gaining experience points and leveling up. The game also utilizes online cooperative play for up to four players, and enemies become tougher to kill with each new person added to a game, essentially, enforcing the need for players to work together in cooperative matches. There are also player vs. player arenas scattered throughout the world of Pandora just in case battling against other people is more your style of play.
Borderlands is a phenomenal looking game that uses advanced cel-shading technology to produce one of the most aesthetically pleasing games ever created even three years after the game's initial release. The game features a fantastic soundtrack primarily composed by BAFTA award winning artist Jesper Kyd and the amazingly talented duo of Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan. Fantastic servers mean you'll stay in lag free games whether you're teaming up with some buddies or matchmaking with random people, and Borderlands also supports local cooperative play for two players for those that prefer the classic couch co-op experience. A fabulous presentation is rounded out with fantastic voice acting that would put most Hollywood movies to shame including the adorable Claptrap companion, crazy bandits scattered around the world and a great performance by the character simply known as the Guardian Angel.
If you haven't yet entered the Borderlands, you're missing out on one of the most influential games of our generation that is easily one of the top games of all-time. From the game's fantastic storyline to its addictive shooting and looting mechanic, you won't be able to get enough Borderlands once you boot up the game. Even if you have already played the original or even own it without the DLC, picking up the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition is well worth your money that you'll save over buying each content drop separately, and unlike other titles, Borderlands's DLC is a must own collection that vastly improves the game's original storyline and delivers high quality content that must be experienced before moving on to the soon to be released Borderlands 2. Check out Borderlands Game of the Year Edition today and don't forget to preorder Borderlands 2 which releases on September 18, 2012.
Borderlands is now available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Mac. Borderlands is rated M by the ESRB for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor & Strong Language. For more information on the game, check out the official Borderlands website.
