Convention Adventures (Comic Strip)

Mortal Kombat (Video Game Review)

"Mortal Kombat!” And just like that, it feels like 1993 again, where two combatants go at it in a fight to the death, either ripping their opponent to shreds in some grotesque way or knocking them off into “the pit”, loaded with spikes that will easily end someone’s fighting career. Every guilty pleasure-inducing vibe that we induced from Midway’s original Mortal Kombat game is present and accounted for in WB Games’ awesome 2011 reboot, with a few extra feaures thrown in for good measure. The story is about the same, but it’s fun seeing it told again in cinematic perspective. Shao Khan wants to rule the world, but in order to do so, he has to follow some crazy Outworld-driven rules, governed by the thunder god Raiden. So, he holds a tounrnament, in which many of the world’s greatest warriors take part to prove their worth. Anyone who stays alive long enough into the final round not only has to put up with him, but also the mysterious (and deadly) shape-shifting sorcerer Shang Ts...

Portal 2 (Video Game Review)

“I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.” The return of the monstrous (yet absolutely riotous) GLADoS is just but one of the big highlights that comes from Portal 2, Valve Software’s long-awaited sequel that hits the Xbox 360 this week. The last we saw of the freakish test-conducting robot, she was being blown to bits by Chell, the unseen hero from the original Portal, available through both the Orange Box compilation and as a download on Xbox Live. After finding out the cake is a lie (damn it), we were wondering where the adventure would take us from there. But if we’ve learned anything from this latest experience, it’s that you should never – ever – doubt Valve. The game begins with you being awoken from a deep sleep, only to find that Aperture Laboratories, where testing from the original game took place, has gone to crap. Infestation has taken over most of the building, and everything is literally falling apart around you. After being guided by a c...

The Darkness 2 (Video Game Preview)

The last we saw of Jackie Estacado, he had sweet revenge on his mind – and a crapload of trouble with a demonic force. The original release of 2K’s The Darkness managed to turn a few heads in the first-person genre, not only because of its impeccable design, but also because of its gritty tone. The game wasn’t afraid to hold back on tense moments, especially ones involving the death of Jackie’s girlfriend, which he witnessed while standing by helplessly. The game turned out to be a pretty big hit for 2K, and that’s more than enough reason to venture forward with a sequel. A few weeks ago at the Game Developers Conference, we managed to get a sneak peek at The Darkness II, the over the top follow-up to Jackie’s original adventures. He’s back in an adventure that’s even more twisted than ever, thanks to a brand new villain who wants to hoard the Darkness for himself and plenty of new powers that guarantee that Jackie’s not inching away from the bloodshed anytime soon. At the start of o...

InvaderCon 2011 (Event Report)

I had hyped InvaderCon up for months, ever since I bought my tickets last year. The convention took place in Atlanta, GA on March 26-27, 2011. It was the 10 year anniversary of the television show Invader Zim. The guests included Andy Berman, Melissa Fahn, Richard Horvitz, Rikki Simons and Eric Trueheart from the show. I have not been a fan of the show for 10 years like most of the die-hard fans that attended the convention, and you could say I have not even been a fan of it for a whole year before the convention.
