Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Video Game Preview)

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to the hit 2010 game Final Fantasy XIII, and it is scheduled to be released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in early 2012. Final Fantasy XIII-2 directly follows the events that unfolded at the end of Final Fantasy XIII. The Sanctum has fallen, the game's heroes are no longer l'Cie and Serah and Dahj have been freed from there crystal imprisonment. Although the old characters are present in Final Fantasy XIII-2, it seems that all of the playable characters in the game will be new playable characters except for Lightning. As of now, two other playable characters have been confirmed for Final Fantasy XIII-2; Serah and a mysterious young boy named Noel. Little is known about Noel, but he seems to be determined to protect Serah. Another character named Alyssa has appeared in trailers for the game, and she seems likely to be a main character in the storyline as well. Alyssa has lost a close friend during the Purge and has a good reason to join the other characters struggle. Some of Snow's old buddies from NORA can be seen in the trailer and may be playable characters as well. They obviously have great fighting skills of their own.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 seems a lot like it's predecessor but with new characters and a new storyline. Little is known yet about the storyline of Final Fantasy XIII-2, but Lightning seems to be off on her own in search of something, perhaps a new purpose in life. The rest of the group are fighting off hordes of monsters that seem to want Serah dead. The NORA members are concerned with a meteor that recently crashed on the planet. It also seems that the group has no idea where Lightning is, but they think she is dead. Then there is the mysterious guy that can be seen in the trailers standing behind Lightning. Who is he?

One thing we can tell for sure for now is that the battle system from Final Fantasy XIII is back in Final Fantasy XIII-2 with a few improvements. While you still fight by setting roles to your characters and switching to pre-set paradigms when needed, there are not real time buttons that give your character's attacks extra boosts. It also seems that there is a new system outside of combat for determining preemptive strikes. Eidolons are back in Final Fantasy XIII-2, or at least Lightning can be seen fighting with Odin. Another new feature to Final Fantasy XIII-2 is areas called unstable rifts. Unstable rifts seem similar to the maps on Dissidia Final Fantasy, and they appear to be designed to gather prizes quickly while running to the end of the are to fight an enemy.Unstable rifts are made difficult and puzzle like, because each tile that makes up the area falls as the character runs over it.
