Season of the Witch (Movie Review)

Season of the Witch was released in 2011 and stars Nicolas Cage. The movie starts out in the City of Vilach in 1235 A.D. with several women being accused of witchcraft and consulting with the Devil.  If they confess then their souls will be spared, and they are then threw off the bridge and hung until dead.  The priest drags the women up out of the water to say last rites over their bodies and then you see that one of the women is an actual witch. So I suppose murdering hundreds to find one witch was the answer in those times.

The story then starts to focus on several battles of soldiers fighting for the Church and after two knights get tired of murdering children and women in the name of God decide to leave. Three years and a season have passed since the plague started in the towns that they visit. After the towns folk find out that the two travelers are more than meets the eye they are taken to the Cardinal and asked to serve the church once more. The mission is to take the Black Witchto the Abbey of Severac where the monks possess the last copy of an ancient book of rituals that will destroy the witch’s powers and end the plague. Since the Church’s ranks have been decimated then they are asked to escort their top knight and priest to take the Black Witch to the Abbey of Severac. They refuse his offer and are jailed as deserters for leaving their duties.

After seeing the young girl accused of being the Black Witch in the Dungeon then they agree to the Cardinal’s offer as long as the girl gets a fair trial and all charges are dropped against them. They collect a guide to take them to Severac and gather the young girl who was given a powerful sedative to knock her out for the journey but manages to still kick their asses. After Nicholas Cage knocks her unconscious then he says, “Now she is sedated.” What a gentleman, obviously not his first time rupheeing and knocking a woman out to get his way with her.
When asked about how they come across the girl, the Priest said she was found wondering & mumbling and that the Plague had touched every town that she had passed. The knight then goes on to say that his town had been under the wrath of the Plague and she had never been to his town. This proving people choose to believe what they already believe. Our two main characters make note of the young girl’s incredible strength and this starts to make you wonder rather she is an innocent or she really is a witch.

The priest gives heed to the others that the witch is a deceiver and will attempt to turn one man against another.  It has not even been one whole day and she has already escaped and you witness men dying left and right as hallucinations take over. The priest states that the witch sees the weakness in their hearts and what sees there will use against them.  As the journey goes on, the girl starts to look dirtier, paler and more evil. And you finally start to think, she is indeed the Black Witch

Long story short, the twist to the storyline is revealed in that it was all one big plan for her to get to the Book of Solmon, and she is in fact evil but not quite a witch. Close enough I suppose. So using the concept that people believe what they already believed to deceive them to think she was a witch because knew that they would take a witch to the Book of Solmon.  And no one lives happily ever after, the end.
