Dark Shadows is director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp's eighth collaboration on the big screen, and that is reason alone for most people to get up and go spend some hard earned money on the film. The new movie is actually a reimagining of the classic television series of the same name that ran from 1966-1971 on ABC. The film stars Johnny Depp as the famous vampire Barnabas Collins--who has returned to the world of the living (and undead) over 200 years after being cursed and put into a deep sleep by the obsessive witch Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green).
Now, it is the 1970's, and Barnabas is definitely in new, uncomfortable territory for both being a vampire in the human world and for the huge leap forward in time. He heads back to his family estate only to find it in disarray thanks in large part to Angelique's attempts to ruin the Collins' name with her every waking moment. So, Barnabas must try to set things right with his family, stop Angelique and attempt to find a way to return himself to human form before all hope is lost. Dark Shadows features an all-star cast that delivers a plethora of exceptional performances. In addition to the brilliant Johnny Depp and Eva Green conflict, you'll also see great performances from Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and young star Chloë Grace Moretz. The superb acting talent is only further made to look better with the amazing coloring effects that really give the film a unique tone all of its own. Tim Burton does an adequate job directing in the film, although some of the storyline seems to feel forced instead of always delivering the perfect conclusion to the proposed problem. Still, Dark Shadows is a horror film worth putting on everyone's must-see list whether you're a fan of the classic television show or simply a fan of entertaining horror cinema.
