The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb (Video Game DLC Review)

The Binding of Isaac released in September of last year and brought PC gamers one of the best independent titles of the entire year. For only $5, the game was more that a bargain for gamers, and added another great, if totally strange, title to the growing list of incredibly addictive and challenging titles from developer Edmund McMillen. Now, it's a year later, and the first DLC expansion has arrived for the game. Wrath of the Lamb adds tons of new content to the game and is a no-brainer pickup for those who are already Isaac fans, but if you haven't played the game yet, read on to learn more.

The Binding of Isaac tasks you with fighting off hordes of monsters across numerous dungeons armed only with your tears as a weapon. To make things easier, you'll find plenty of items to upgrade your defenses and your ability to fire tear projectiles. The game is played from a top-down view with dungeons laid out very similar to what you'd see in the classic Legend of Zelda series only each boss defeated awards you with a unique item rather than a piece of triforce. The game is very much a roguelike meaning you'll enter each new game armed with nothing but character presets, and dungeons are randomized to keep replayability and the challenge high.

For The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb, over 100 new items enter the game making each game you play that much more randomized. The game has also added plenty of new bosses that can be fought in each type of dungeon, and you'll experience new floors to the dungeon as well with five new chapters to explore and conquer. Of course, with new dungeons come new enemies that you'll have to adapt to take down efficiently. There's a new character, new endings and so much more, but you'll now find a whole new item type known as trinkets. These special items can be found randomly throughout dungeons and will grant their holder's a less powerful ability such as a slight increase to find bombs, a chance to regain life for clearing a room and more, but you'll only be able to hold one of these unless you meet a special requirement.

You'll also find a whole new way to play the game with the new challenge mode that will unlock additional items for completing each of the 10 special runs through the game. Wrath of the Lamb makes The Binding of Isaac that much more challenging, and you'll need to properly utilize all of the game's new items to stand a chance at beating the new version of the game. Still, it's a lot of fun, and those who have never played the original can jump into this new content for only $8 total--$5 for The Binding of Isaac and $3 for Wrath of the Lamb, so there's no excuse not to try out the game today!

The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb is now available for download exclusively for PC via Steam and can be purchased for $2.99. For more information on the The Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb, check out the official The Binding of Isaac Wiki.
