The Grey is a new action drama starring actor Liam Neeson as John Ottway. The hunter turned oil rig worker finds himself stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with a few surviving coworkers after their plane mysteriously crashes over the frozen forests below. The film is based on a true story and shows the limits some would go to survive against all odds and how different people would act to the same situation. The film is worth a single watch, but little beyond. Fans will be treated to a slow beginning before the desperate fight for survival begins and the film eventually arrives at a sudden and disappointing ending.
The survivors are forced to fight for survival in the Alaskan wilderness where the weather threatens to freeze them to death, while a pack of bloodthirsty wolves are looking to do the same thing. The team of survivors are led by Ottway, who seems to be the only one with any natural survival instincts that derive from his time spent as a hunter. Liam delivers a good performance as Ottway in the film, but the only other memorable survivor that happens to be the asshole of the group. It's difficult to feel any sympathy for the characters when they die in the film with no way to connect to the boring characters that surround Ottway.
When Ottway sleeps or has a cold moment alone to think to himself throughout the film, he likes to think back on he and his wife spending time together. This leads the viewer to believe the two have been recently divorced, and Ottway is just having problems accepting his new life without her. The dream sequences are one of the most interesting aspects of the film, but when moviegoers are expecting a good action film heading into the movie, this can be a real disappointment.
The Grey is worth watching once, but once all the surprises in the film have been revealed, there is little reason to watch it again. The showdowns with the wolves offer some very tense moments, and even some minor scenes of horror. The surprises in the film are pretty incredible too, but once no surprises are left, there is no excitement left either. Fans looking for their fill of Liam Neeson have a lot better films to choose from than The Grey.
The Grey is now available from all major retailers and has been rated R by the MPAA. For more information on the film, check out the official The Grey website.
