Comic-Con International made its way to sunny San Diego, California last week for the annual summertime fandom convention bringing plenty of guests, exhibitors and special events for attendees to enjoy. Just a few of the guests at the event included The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer and Michael Trucco and British talk show host and comics author Johnathan Ross. Fans could attend great events such as the 24th annual Eisner Awards presented by Syfy which honors the best in comics as well. Even though comics and television may have been the star of the show, Comic-Con also draws out plenty of publishers and developers from the gaming industry as well. Many prominent video game companies were present at the event including Activision, Capcom, Konami, Square Enix and more. Of course, there were tons of panels and newly revealed trailers at the event as well.

The Last of Us is easily one of the most highly anticipated games for any system. The Playstation 3 exclusive from developer Naughty Dog follows the story of post-apocalyptic survivors Joel and Ellie in a dangerous world where a fungal born disease has wiped out nearly all of the world’s population and civilization in nonexistent when only surviving another day matters. Naughty Dog employees were present at Comic-Con as were voice actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and W. Earl Brown where they discussed many important topics surrounding the development of the game including where the idea for The Last of Us originated, how the developers use violence and character development to create a realistic open world, how the voice actors portray real characters in an artificial environment, how gameplay and character interactions combine to make a cinematic experience and more. Naughty Dog also revealed a new cinematic cutscene during the panel where Joel and Ellie have finally made it to Bill’s safe house, but it turns out he isn’t too thrilled to see them.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is another highly anticipated title that will be available exclusively for PlayStation owners and will release later this year. This title brings together numerous PlayStation and third party characters for one massive fighting game experience with various video game themed stages being the backdrop for fights for up to four characters simultaneously. Characters in the game include God of War’s Kratos, Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, Fat Princess, and Bioshock’s Big Daddy, and each character brings their own unique fighting style to the game and come complete with their own devastatingly powerful super moves that allow them to make quick work of their opponents. Developer SuperBot was represented in a Comic-Con panel by Studio President Chan Park and Game Director Omar Kendall where they discussed important topics surrounding the creation of the game including what is was like to receive the task of creating a game with so many beloved characters, how important it is to stay true to the games the characters and stages in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale originate from, how the team chooses which characters make it into the game, what the game’s storyline will be, the other game modes you can find in the game and plenty more. The panel itself is well worth the watch, but the company also produced several new character reveal trailers for their new characters Cole Macgrath and Jak and Daxter.
BEYOND: Two Souls is yet another highly anticipated title that made its way to San Diego Comic-Con this year. Quantic Dreams Writer/Director David Cage, Actress Ellen Page and Actor Kadeem Hardison made up the game’s panel, and they explained many of the factors that goes into creating the game and also what type of gameplay you can expect once the title releases exclusively for PlayStation 3.
In the biggest surprise of the entire convention, Activision announced a new superhero title starring the one and only Deadpool. Deadpool’s self-titled game will star the maniacal and charismatic hero, and you will have full range of his abilities that allow him to easily decapitate foes, use firearms with a great proficiency and use his incredible charm and wit to keep you laughing. While not much info was released for the game beyond the trailer, we can expect that the game will probably be released for PlayStation 3 and feature some sort of storyline, although Deadpool could probably carry a game by himself if Activision decided to go that route. Comic-Con was a wonderful event packed with many great surprises including many for the gaming industry. These already highly anticipated titles just seem to get better as more information is revealed on them. PlayStation 3 has made its case for best console of this generation with many great exclusives having already been released for the system and these other titles on their way.
