Event Report: Finals Thoughts On Scarefest 2012

Scarefest 2012 took place in Lexington, KY during the weekend of September 28-30th. The event was jam packed even with the recent cancellations of Clive Barker, Malcolm Mcdowell and Jon Bernthal.

Scarefest is one of the largest horror conventions in the world and every year it has a impressive guest line-up, intriguing panels and fun, interactive events such as the costume contest. This year's event was headlined with such guests as Chandler Riggs, Tony Todd, Doug Bradley, Chris Sarandon, Jonathan Breck, Stephen Geoffreys, Dee Wallace, Tyler Mane and many more.

Lines were out the door for some of the more popular fan favorites such as Tony Todd and Chandler Riggs. After the six hour drive to Lexington then the last thing anyone wants to do is stand in a long line, but horror fans will bear any amount of uncomfortable torture to see their favorite stars. My two top picks for the event were Tony Todd and Chris Sarandon. The iconic Candyman film series was one of the most memorable horror films from my childhood and to meet the legend is priceless. Tony Todd was very friendly and embracing to all of his fans, and even showed his humorous side, as he joked with fans for hours on end. Chris Sarandon was probably one of the nicest individuals at the event and took the time to make every fan feel special with kind words and a smile. Sarandon is known for playing Jack Skellington in the 1993 animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas.

At any event, you always have those guests who just do not take their fans into that high of consideration. Several featured guests would rarely be at their table with volunteers holding their spots for hours on end and would then leave the event early. This can be disappointing for the fans who work a day job and then drive countless hours to meet them to only be disappointed. I stood at Lisa Marie's table for over an hour as she was "supposedly on a bathroom break" and had left 20 minutes before I had arrived. I was told she would "be back any minute" and after hour standing at her booth then I realized that I had wasted an hour of my day.

Scarefest was the first convention I ever attended, and it started my journey into the horror scene. This year was rather disappointing with many aspects of the event needing major improvement. As a hardcore horror fan and reporter, I was not impressed.
