Deepworld (Video Game Review)

Deepworld is the newest release from Chicago based independent developers Bytebin. The company consists of the three-man team of developers Mike Laurence and Jason Pearl and artist Quinn Stephens, which makes Deepworld all the more impressive of a game. The new title is currently available free-to-play on PC, Mac and iOS, and it can easily be compared to similar open-world adventures such as Minecraft and Terraria with a steampunk twist. Deepworld has something those other games don't however--accessibility. Players can experience the massively online multiplayer world across multiple platforms and pick up and continuing playing the same game on a different platform. Combine this with addictive gameplay and excellent design, and you have a game that every fan of the sandbox genre should want to pick up in Deepworld.

Deepworld
takes players to a steampunk themed universe of many connected worlds including the towns of Strangepeak, Tinytown, Bootopia and more. The worlds act as servers for Deepworld but do offer slightly different environments that have been crafted out by players over time. Deepworld doesn't offer much in terms of storyline and progression, only dropping players into the world with a small inventory and a learn as you play tutorial that will guide you through all of the most important mechanics of the game. The steampunk themed items provide an aesthetic unavailable in any similar title without mods or installing skin packs, and they add a nice, gritty feel to the world that just adds to the thrill of surviving in this dangerous world. Of course, there are plenty of monsters you'll encounter during your time in Deepworld, so the first thing you'll want to do is create a safe house, find a building that has already been built by other players or seek shelter in an abandoned ruined crafted by the game's creators to keep you safe, as you begin creating more useful items to make your way through the world more safely.

In Deepworld, you'll scavenge and mine resources to use when creating better items and equipment. You can search the surface, explore ruins, mine deep into caves or create your own caverns, and you'll easily navigate the environments of Deepworld thanks to a special jetpack your character always has equipped. Deepworld includes RPG elements that let you complete special objectives to level up and increase your character's statistics such as dexterity and mining ability. You can also fully customize your character with different skin colors, clothes and more to make the character truly your own. After spending enough time with the game, you'll be allowed to craft special items and even your own machines that give some amazing effects such as the ability to keep your home safe from intruders. There are 100s of items to create in Deepworld with its easy to use crafting system, and you'll spend hours creating the best inventories and gathering supplies to see all of the different items available to you in the game.

Deepworld is a blast to play, especially with all of your friends in a single online session. The only noticeable flaws in the game comes in the graphical presentation and sound departments. Deepworld features stiff animations and lackluster graphics that can make the repetitive nature of the game all the more apparent at times. You'll also get tired of the unusually loud sound effects as you move around the world on foot. These aren't major gripes, as games of this mold have never been known for their great graphics or animations, and you'll hardly notice the sounds while mining resources or battling against enemies. It also helps that you will constantly run into players throughout your time in the game, and you can use teleport around the map to more easily find your friends when needed. Deepworld is as an immersive and addicting title as you'll find on any system, and you can play it now for free to make it an even better deal for gamers. The game has now been adapted for play on either PC, Mac and now iPad with special touch controls that make the great game available on the go with a control system that feels just as natural as keyboard and mouse. Check out Deepworld today from Bytebin Studios!

Deepworld is now available free-to-play for PC, Mac & iOS, and players can be upgraded to the premium edition for only $4.99. For more information on the game, check out the official Deepworld website.
