Capcom Arcade Cabinet: Game Pack 5 (Video Game Review)

Developer and publisher Capcom have announced the release of the all new 1984 Pack for their hit collection called the Capcom Arcade Cabinet. The release is the last pack in the Capcom Arcade Cabinet and once again comes packed with three classic Capcom titles all for 400 Microsoft Points. Players will unlock the games 1942, SonSon and Pirate Ship Higemaru for purchasing the pack, and now, there are additional games to be unlocked by purchasing each pack available in the Capcom Arcade Cabinet. Players who purchase all 15 games included in the Capcom Arcade Cabinet will automatically unlock the two bonus games 1943 Kai -- previously, only an exclusive in Japan that continues the 1942 series -- and Vulgus -- a classic shoot 'em up where players encounter endless waves of enemies in an attempt for the highest score possible. These are the oldest games released for the Capcom Arcade Cabinet, but they're still a lot of fun and shouldn't be missed if you're a fan of classic arcade games.

1942 is the first game in the 1984 pack and one of the first memorable vertical scrolling shooters that helped get a generation of gamers into the arcades. 1942 places players in control of a fighter ship in the same year as the name of the game during World War II on a mission to find and destroy the entire Japanese air legion. Players progress through stages firing at enemy ships, grabbing powerups and carefully avoiding incoming fire. While the game can't be considered bullet hell exactly, there is enough challenge to the game for any scrolling shooting fan to enjoy, and each stage gets progressively more difficult and features a different boss encounter at the end of each stage. Up to two players can join in a game and work together to take down the Japanese fleet and return home a true war hero. This is one of the most popular titles featured in the entire Capcom Arcade Cabinet and with good reason.

SonSon is the second game in the 1984 pack and is one of the first to offer a true arcade experience. Players take the roles of SonSon and TonTon who set off on a journey to find a hidden scroll in India when their friends are abducted by a clan of evil demons. Now, the duo must work together to find the lost scroll and rescue their kidnapped friends. Though there is a progression of levels present in the game and indicated by the number clouds passed through on each stage, the game essentially has endless waves with the overarching goal to simply get the highest score possible. There are fruit and other foods scattered throughout the stages, and projectiles can be fired at the bats, piranhas, bandits and other enemies that attack players in waves. At the end of each level is a fortress boss battle, and a special item can be obtained through destroying the fortress quickly enough. SonSon is a fun title that is both challenging and addictive, and the ability to add a second player to sessions makes it a fun cooperative experience as well.

Pirate Ship Higemaru is the last game featured in the 1984 pack. This game places players in control of a sailor trapped on board a dangerous pirate ship. Pirate Ship Higemaru features plenty of Pac-Man inspirations, as players navigate randomly generated mazes and avoiding pirates. The object of the game is to pick up the barrels that make up the walls in each stage and throw them at the pirates that stealthily attack players on foot or from the inside of a barrel. Players can work together to take out the ship's captain and his crew all while grabbing flashing barrels that house hidden items worth bonus points and grabbing powerups that grant invincibility for short durations. The game is incredibly addictive for classic gamers that remember a time when each new life cost you another quarter and the only reward for playing well was a chance to enter your initials as a high score.

The Capcom Arcade Cabinet isn't for everyone, but the collection offers plenty of old school games that are worth reliving again if you're an older gamer or enjoy the classics. There has never been a better way to play through the golden era of games than with this collection that automatically saves your replays that can easily be transferred to online video services, gives plenty of audio and video options to ensure you're getting optimal quality sound and visuals, and features a bevy of other new features including Trophy/Achievement support, unlockable artwork and online cooperative play over Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network. Capcom also recently announced the entire 15-game collection featured in Capcom Arcade Cabinet will be available to purchase at a discounted $29.99 or 2400 Microsoft Points starting on May 21, 2013 giving fans the best chance to own all of these classic titles. Fans will want to pick up the 1984 pack as one of the best released for Capcom Arcade Cabinet and shoot for high scores if you're into that sort of thing.
