Metro: Last Light (Video Game Review)

Developer 4A Games and THQ were hard at work preparing Metro: Last Light for release over the past couple of years, when the publisher went bankrupt, but luckily for fans, Deep Silver stepped in to see the project through until the end and make sure the game was released. Metro: Last Light is a sequel to Metro 2033 that takes players to post-apocalyptic ruins of Moscow in the year 2034, shortly after the events of its predecessor. Fans of the first-person shooter series will feel right at home in the new release while being equally thrilled with new additions included in Metro: Last Light that makes this game well worth experiencing for all first-person shooter fans.

Players resume the role of the powerful soldier Artyom in Metro: Last Light with the action picking up shortly after the battle against the Dark Ones. Though few survivors remain in the world, there are still those that won't stop until humankind is completely wiped of the face of the planet, and an imminent war is on the way that will decide which faction will get their hands on a deadly technology located in the military vaults codenamed D6. Artyom will be key in the upcoming battles that will take players to the surface to battle it out with packs of wild mutants, to strategically overpower human enemies in the underground tunnels and fighting everything in between. Metro: Last Light features a great story with a primary focus on the game's lone single player experience with strong character development from a host of new characters present in the sequel. There is also a strong focus on morally correct or evil decisions that will shape how the story progresses and will force players to carefully weigh the outcomes of their actions. Metro: Last Light features one of the strongest storylines in a first-person shooter that will obviously have some people comparing its narrative with BioShock Infinite.

Metro: Last Light has been compared several times to Valve's classic shooter title Half Life 2 through it's development, and the final product is a game that is definitely comparable to the all-time classic. The game is equal parts action and survival horror that will get adrenaline rushing for one reason or the other. Artyom's watch is a vital piece of equipment throughout the game that will help with sticking to shadows in order to stay out of the vision of human enemies, while fighting above ground will require the player to keep a close watch on air supply while searching for well lit areas to fight off the horrifying mutants of the surface world. The game places an emphasis on creating unique weapons that are easily discernable as random salvage parts brought together to create a new weapon in a pinch. Plenty of new weapons are included in the game as well including handheld flamethrowers, a hand powered chaingun or even an incredibly powerful one-shot pistol; better not miss! There have also been rumblings that Metro: Last Light will add in a multiplayer component as free DLC post launch that could add even more depth to a game that is already one of the most entertaining single player video games released in 2013.

Metro: Last Light is highly addictive and offers a unique gameplay experience unlike any other. The game's world, characters, guns and everything else are incredibly detailed and look especially impressive when playing on higher end PC units. The game is terrifying and nails exactly what a survival game should encompass. Unique traits such as requiring players to wipe rain or blood from the mask to clear the line of sight or building bizarre weaponry while carefully managing limited stashes of ammunition makes this a truly one of a kind title. Fans of the series should pick up Metro: Last Light without hesitation, while gamers who have yet to try the series should neglect this post-apocalyptic version of Moscow no longer. Survive mankind's darkest hour in Metro: Last Light out now on all major platforms.

Metro: Last Light is now available from all major retailers for the MSRP of $59.99 and can be purchased for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Metro: Last Light is rated M by the ESRB for Blood, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language & Use of Drugs and Alcohol.
