Guy Adam's newest release Deadbeat-Makes You Stronger tells the story of two old friends, Max and Tom. The intriguing cover for the book gives you a glimpse of the adventure ahead with its shadowy footsteps, the glimpse into an eerie graveyard and the bright neon Jazz sign.
Once you flip the book over, the back reads:
Max and Tom are old, old friends, who used to be actors. Tom now owns a jazz club called Deadbeat which, as well as being their source of income, is also something of an in-joke. In a dark suburban churchyard one night they see a group of men loading a coffin into the back of a van. But why would you be taking a full coffin away from a graveyard and, more importantly, why is the occupant still breathing?
If I was to judge a book by its cover then I was already intrigued by Deadbeat before I ever opened it. The novel starts out by introducing us to our protagonists Max Jackson and Tom Harris. These two are not only long time friends, but also ex-actors, who still have a preference for the theatrical. Tom now owns a jazz club called Deadbeat were the two are often found drinking and having a good ole time. However, everything changes one night as they stumble onto a bunch of men loading a coffin into a creepy van. Of course, people loading a coffin into anything but a hearse would alarm anyone, but it is especially intriguing to our theatric pair who are in a inebriated haze. The big thing here is that the occupant of the coffin is still breathing and this is were our story gets interesting.
Tom insists that they investigate the mystery and poor Max gets to tag along for the ride. We soon find that these two are no Hardy Boys and land themselves into a horrifying plot. As the story unfolds, we learn more about the boy's hidden secrets, as they try to uncover what is really going on. Guy Adams has managed to created a entertainingly majestic story packed full of mystery, gore and dark humor. Tom and Max are fun and lovable characters whose bromance ways are entertaining on their own. Deadbeat-Makes You Stronger is a Sherlock Holmes mystery meets the fun intrigue of Supernatural's Sam and Dean.
Deadbeat-Makes You Stronger is a cleverly written tale full of suspense, dark humor and fun. The book has some nice reveals and keeps you hooked with its constantly changing perspective as the story is told through the eyes of our two protagonists Tom and Max. The story spans across 280 pages and is a great read. We can't wait to see what the Deadbeat series throws at us next!
