Deadpool (Video Game Review)

Marvel Entertainment created something very unique with the Deadpool character. Deadpool is your favorite anti-hero that manages to always get a laugh with his toilet humor and funny one-liners. The hired mercenary has turned to the side of the good in the new Deadpool game and has some of the best combined abilities out of all the superheroes with his abilities to heal quickly, teleport and of course his brute strength. The best part of Deadpool is his crass and disgusting sense of humor. This humor manages to shine through in every aspect of the game from the intricate story to the action-packed combat.

High Moon Studios, known for their work on the Transformer game series, has brought their A-game with the development of Deadpool. We can safely say that it is one of the most entertaining and humorous games to release in a long time. The game starts with Deadpool actually trying to get High Moon to make his new video game but he is quickly turned down. What does Deadpool do? Well he blows their studio to kingdom come that's what! The game is very tongue-in-cheek and that is what we love about it. This is evident from the start of the game when you are tasked with "playing with Deadpool's junk" or all the stuff found around his apartment. Players are able to blow up a sex doll, play with his dog Red Rocket, make a 1000 pancakes and even take poop or 'making a stink pickle' as he says. Yeah, Deadpool has no shame.

The best part of the game is that Deadpool is constantly interacting and talking to the player. You do something wrong? Deadpool will tell you about it. He also banters back and forth with his inner voices and the all knowing voice from the sky. He is consciously pointing out clichés in the game's script and takes the time to wow us with his potty humor every chance he gets. To say that it is not entertaining--would be a complete lie! As with all games, you may notice some repetition; but to us gameplay was always refreshing and enjoyable. The script and amazing story were written by Daniel Way of Marvel Comics. The story is only enhanced by the voice acting of Nolan North and his perfect comedic timing which really brings the game to life.

Deadpool combines action-packed melee action with that of shooting and players can upgrade their arsenal of weapons as the game progresses. The story of Deadpool revolves around our protagonist accepting a mission to kill Chance White. Mr. White is a corrupted media mogul who has produced such terrible TV programming that well..he just must die! Mr. Sinister steps in and messes up Deadpool's plan which costs him the heaping amount of money he was to obtain from the death of Mr. White. Deadpool is then on a mission to get revenge and tracks Mr. Sinister to Genosha. Deadpool soon realizes that Sinister is using the mutant haven to gather DNA to form an army. Many great comic-book characters make their debut in the Deadpool game which include the likes of Wolverine, Rogue, Vertigo, Domino, Psylocke and Cable to name a few. Deadpool is almost like an interactive 3D comic that has been brought to life right before your very eyes.

Deadpool manages to combine everything you love from a hack-n-slasher with that of a 3rd person shooter. Combat contains light, heavy and counter-attacks which can be chained together to take out several enemies at once. By chaining combos together, players can really rack up the DP points which are used to buy new weapons and upgrades. Also, the successful completion of combos builds up your momentum meters to unleash momentum attacks. These attacks are very useful in crowd control and to take out a horde of baddies at once. Dodging attacks is done by teleporting which is one of the best parts of combat. Teleporting can also be used when you are falling to your death in order to get your feet back on solid ground. Deadpool suffers from some stiff platforming due to the awkwardness of our protagonist. Yeah, he isn't a graceful ballerina. One of the best combat moments was when a level suddenly turns into a top-down Zelda game, and you are fighting skeletons to collect keys after Deadpool blew all the game's budget.

All-in-all, Deadpool is a hilarious and short game. You may only get about five hours of gameplay in your first playthrough but this is made up by its high degree of replayability. Players can also spend countless hours on "Challenge Mode" and unlockables. Challenge mode is made up of wave-based stages that Deadpool must survive which take place in various places from the main story. The game also contains a ton of variety that keeps the game fresh from carnival rides to sewer mazes. From its senseless and extreme violence to the potty mouth one-liners, Deadpool offers up a entertaining ride that will leave you feeling dirty once its over.

Deadpool is now available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC for $49.99. For more information or to purchase a copy of Deadpool, check out the official Dead Pool website.
