Sometimes the standard retail version of a console just isn’t enough for some causing people to go to extreme lengths to modify and improve their systems. Most of the time they create a technological abomination but every now and then someone out there builds something incredible. Here are 5 of the best DIY gaming jobs that would have the cast of Home Improvement nodding their heads in united approval.
5. Super Genitari
Many gamers will agree that the old systems are the best systems. Richard DaLuz is evidently a man who agrees with them as he’s built a retro super system called the ‘Super Genitari’. This system is a 4-in-1 design bringing together an Atari 2600 a NES a Genesis and Super NES all into one swish looking console. It features controller ports for each system along with switch buttons to flit between systems as you would with sources on your TV. An LED also lights up the front mounted Pac Man like some sort of shrine. Why have one when you can have four?
4. Xbox 360 Car
One of the less practical mods, this sees a team putting a 23 inch LCD TV into the back of a car and hooking up their Xbox 360 to it. The best part of this mod is they patch into the local Wi-Fi (lovingly supplied by Google) to actually play Xbox Live in the back of a moving car. The video below demonstrates as they play Rainbow Six Vegas and Uno on Live. Whilst hooking a TV up to your car probably isn’t the wisest thing seen on YouTube it certainly takes the idea of portable gaming to new extremes.
3. PS3/Xbox 360 Laptop
Speaking of portable gaming, ever thought your PSP needed some extra juice or that Xbox should finally journey into the portable industry? Well here’s your fix, console hacking extraordinaire Ben Heck has designed portable (ish) laptops housing either the PS3 or Xbox 360 systems. His Xbox laptop features an Elite console with a 120GB HDD and HDMI output to the screen in the lid, features two USB ports and even has the wireless adapter built in. The PS3 rendition is pretty similar however only carries a 40GB HDD and has extra fans for cooling. Both DIY projects not only showcase Heck’s clinical insanity but also just how PC-like both current gen consoles actually are.
2. Ultimate Combo System
Similarly to the Super Genitari we saw back at number 5, the Ultimate Combo System (UCS) brings together three systems in one box. This is another brainchild of Ben Hecks and sees all three current generation consoles (that’s the PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii U) together in a rather humble looking wooden box. His aim was to finally end the long running console war and unite all factions under one glorious banner. The UCS features a single disk drive, separate on/off switches for each console, wireless capabilities and obviously the 3 consoles all wrapped up in a surprisingly small wooden chassis. Who knows what The Heck (see what we did there?) will come up with next when the PS4 and Xbox One are released?
1. Portable N64
Although this DIY project isn’t particularly big or particularly mind bending it is beautifully simple and the results are amazing. This is of course a Portable Nintendo 64. This project takes the innards of a beloved N64 and partners it with an old PS1 screen brining them together in a custom built shell. The cartridge slots into the back section (much like the Gameboy) where you’ll also find a fan/kick stool. The front façade features all the original buttons and a thumb stick but also includes volume and contrast controls. There’s also an external port enabling for a second controller (local-portable-multiplayer?!) and mains charging. Bring your dusty old N64 back to life and play some GoldenEye on the train to work with this relatively achievable number 1 DIY gaming project.

DISCLAIMER: Modifying your console WILL void any and all warranties you have on that console, mods show were carried out by professionals.
