Rayman Legends (Video Game Review)

Ubisoft's Rayman Legends is the direct sequel to Rayman Origins which released in 2011. Fans have eagerly awaited the game since it was announced and have suffered through countless delays. However, Rayman Legends proves that all good things are worth waiting for and this time is no different.

Fans have been enjoying Rayman's adventures for years, but his latest journey, Rayman Legends, is undoubtedly his most ambitious. Initially announced as an exclusive launch title for Wii U, Ubisoft decided to delay the release and expand the experience on Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita. This decision pleased a lot of gamers, because they were able to get in on the action that they may have otherwise missed out on.

Rayman Legends allows you to literally control a cartoon character with its beautiful 2D visuals that are simply stunning. Every character in the game is extremely detailed with animations that are full of expression. The game's backgrounds are bright and colorful and really bring each scene to life. It is safe to say that you won't find many games released this year that are as visually appealing as Rayman Legends.

The storyline for Rayman Legends is pure madness as you would come to expect from the limbless character. In his new adventure, Rayman and his friends have been asleep for over a century and awake to a world of nightmares. Players must move quickly to pick up Lums and rescue imprisoned Teensies. In order to open more levels, you have to rescue even more Teensies, thus they are they key to your success. The same method applies to unlocking characters, whereas the more Lums you have, the more character unlocks you get. The game doesn't waste time on useless plot points with Rayman Legends employing a simple yet effective system. Basically, Rayman Legends is all about having fun and that is made very clear from the get go.

The gameplay in Rayman Legends matches up to its amazing presentation. The game manages to maintain a fun 2D platforming experience while adding in a ton of levels with different lengths and rhythms for variety. As is natural with these types of games, players will be thrown into various levels and must fight their way through them to get to the next one. There is no set course in Rayman Legends and you can either play straight forward or explore the many nook and crannies the game has to offer. Basically, if you plan to take in all the fun in Rayman Legends then be ready to play the levels again and again.

The worlds are beautifully drawn in each level and follow a particular theme in order to keep things interesting. Players will be able to venture through massive environments that appear to be something straight out of a fairy tale from the luxurious castles to its beautiful princesses. The fairy tale nature is only further enhanced on the more musical levels which are jam packed with whimsical and artistic sounds. The graphics and music make the tasks at hand that more gratifying as you free your locked up comrades, collect Lums and venture into new worlds that you unlock. There is a lot to do in Rayman Legends!

Rayman Legends
can be played solo or with friends through the seamless drop-in/drop out co-op system, but whatever method you choose, the experience is entertaining and wildly inventive. The only problem that Rayman Legends suffers from is that there just isn't enough of it. Players will find that they have completed all of the game's levels in a few days and start going through withdrawal from it shortly after. However, gamers will find that Ubisoft was gracious enough to add a few levels from Rayman Origins and a few addictive mini-games to keep you going.

Rayman Legends literally has it all. It has a breathtaking visuals, beautiful music, epic boss battles and a slew of new characters and fun levels. Rayman Legends allows players to participate in an epic fantasy themed adventure that offers one of the most legendary game experiences of 2013. If you are looking for a high-quality 2D platforming experience, then pick up Rayman Legends today!

Rayman Legends is now available for pre-order from all major retailers for the MSRP of $59.99 and $39.99 respectively for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PS Vita. Rayman Legends is rated E10+ for comic mischief and mild cartoon violence. To learn more, visit the official Rayman Legends website.
