The Geek's Guide to Dating (Book Review)

Dating in today's society is hard enough, and gamers are always looking for a few cheat codes to make the process easier. The Geek's Guide to Dating by Eric Smith offers up some valuable advice with a walkthrough tutorial of how to snag that next date. The book is divided into sections or levels, like you would find in a video game, that focuses on various aspects from how to dress to entertaining comments to express your geek culture.

The book points out that players must first look inside and discover more about themselves before looking into what they might want in a Player Two. To start, players have to figure out what they are by taking the geekness test to see what category they fit into. So to start, you have to ask yourself, "What are your talents and abilities?" The categories range from Pop Culture Geeks to Academic Geeks with many options in between. I really loved the thought and preparation that went into the book, and the author did a perfect job of providing helpful information to its geek audience.

Once you figure out where you fit then the The Geek's Guide to Dating helps you prepare by showing you how to plan a date, what to wear and even tips for after the date ends. The best part of the book is how it relates certain aspects of dating to elements found in World of Warcraft, Super Mario Brothers and various other games. This means that even if you wasn't looking for a date then you could still enjoy the book due to the fact that it is such an entertaining read. The book helps geeks everywhere learn to discover more about them before they go on that epic quest to find their princess.

One of the only problems with The Geek's Guide to Dating it is primarily geared toward males looking for females with little advice for girl geeks. However, there is still tons of valuable information that can be taken away from the book no matter if your female or male. The author manages to cover it all in the book from tips for meeting girls IRL all the way to tracking them on social media. Each section also lists a difficulty level or stats relating to how hard it is to complete or carry out. There are even some great sections for when dating ends and you move into a relationship with tips on how to balance your love life and geek life. But even if your dating quest fails--don't fear because there is even advice for that too!

All-in-all, The Geek's Guide to Dating is a perfect guide for geeks looking to find their perfect match or just for anyone looking for an entertaining read with eccentric 8-bit art. If you have failed terribly at your quest so far  to find a Player Two then look no further with this tantalizing and fun book from Eric Smith. The Geek's Guide to Dating will release on December 3, 2013 for the MSRP of $14.99. To learn more, visit the official Quirk Books website.
