Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring is a true story based around a group of teenagers who went on a robbing spree in LA of A-list celebrities that included the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Orlando Bloom. Almost a year ago, I caught a reality series on Netflix entitled Pretty Wild starring Alexis Neiers and Tess Taylor who were two of the members of the The Bling Ring. Once I heard a movie was in the works starring the duo then I was very interested in picking it up. However, the movie is a hot, boring mess about like all of the real life people it is based around.
The burglaries took place in 2009 with a group of spoiled teens who were obsessed with celebrities and wanted to experience their lifestyles. Coppola's portrayal of the teens are almost dead on and gives you a look into their lives of celebrity obsession. If it wasn't for their constant bragging and posting pictures of stolen goods to social media sites then who knows if the crew would have ever gotten caught. The film includes a great cast which includes the likes of Emma Watson (Nicki) and Leslie Mann (Laurie). As you watch the actions of the teens it almost seems like a cry for help, but no one is taking the time to listen. You soon see why with parents like Laurie teaching nonsense homeschooling lessons to her three children Nicki, Sam (Taissa Farmiga) and Emily (Georgia Rock) such as living life by the teachings of The Secret and what they most admire about celebrities like Angelina Jolie. The teachings are almost like a reinforcement of celebrity worshipping and explains why the teens go on to commit the crimes they do.
All-in-all, The Bling Ring is a creative look into celebrity worship and our obsession with them but still falls flat even with its superb acting performances. The film moves along with no real plot except to focus on the burglaries that took place and has very little to keep you entertained. The Bling Ring is a snooze much like the lives of the people it portrays.
