The Croods is a new DreamWorks animated film from the minds of directors Kirk DiMicco and Chris Sanders. The film stars Emma Stone as a teenage cavegirl named Eep, who lives with her crazy and diverse family inside a dark cave. Something world changing happens one day that draws the family away from their life of isolation though, and Eep finally gets to live out her dream beyond simply surviving on the inside of a cave. The film features a cast of popular movie stars, but the family on-screen lacks the charisma to make the film one that will be a favorite of all viewers, though some kids are still sure to enjoy it.
The Croods instantly introduces viewers to Eep, a young cave girl that is tired of living life by her dad's overly secure rules and really only wants to have some excitement added to her life. Apparently, fighting against plenty of carnivorous, prehistoric creatures after being locked inside of a cave for three days with nothing to eat isn't a big enough adventure for the young protagonist. After a close encounter with a man-eating cat, Eep is awakened by a bright light that leaks into the cave, and the young girl heads out to discover what is causing the phenomenon only to run into new characters that will change the lives of the Crood family forever.
While the film's narrative is pretty basic, it's interesting enough to keep the attention of a younger audience. The title family in the film lack the chemistry or excitement to keep older moviegoers entertained however. The film uses a simple minded son and a crazy child to create most of its humorous moments, while the main trio of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds fail at establishing any excitement for viewers. The film does feature some of the best animation and effects ever seen in a DreamWorks film though, which is another step in securing a devoted young fanbase.
Parents will pick up a copy of The Croods for their kids, but they're not likely to enjoy the film much themselves. The film lacks the humor or great storytelling that would make it an enjoyable experience for the whole family. There are some pretty silly jokes and fantastic animations in the film that younger fans will appreciate though. The Croods is a good film for its target audience, but it's unlikely to gain the attention of older viewers. Pick up a copy of The Croods if you have kids, otherwise you can head back to your cave and find a more entertaining film to rent.
The Croods is now available on DVD, Blu-ray and Video on Demand. The Croods is rated PG by the MPAA. For more information on the film, check out the official The Croods website.
