Lost Planet: First Colony (Book Review)

Titan Books has released Lost Planet: First Colony which is a brand-new adventure within the Lost Planet universe. The graphic novel is a prologue to Capcom's Lost Planet 3 and gives players the shocking history set over forty years before those that occurred in the video game.

The world has become decimated and humanity is slowly trying to salvage what remains on Earth. While the planet and its inhabitants suffer, the government has set out on an epic quest to solve the problem by finding natural resources with a new space exploration program. The program is ran by one of the most powerful companies in the world, which is Neo Venus Construction, who send thousands of specialized candidates around the universe looking for potential resources. Most of the individuals seek fame and money in their search while trying to find a world that has enough energy to sustain their planet. A team thinks they have found just what they need when they discover E.D.N. III which is abundant in the resources and energy they need but comes at a great price. Professor Soichi and his team soon discover that the icy planet is packed full of dangers that they are not prepared for with the alien species called Akrid.

Without spoiling to much of the story which has been cleverly plotted out by its writer Izu with beautifully colored art by Massimo Dall'oglio―Lost Planet: First Colony manages to tie-in a general backstory and history to what players experienced in the Lost Planet 3 video game. The graphic novel is best enjoyed if you have played the game, however, it is still constructed in a way that it can be enjoyed by those who know nothing about the Lost Planet series.

Lost Planet: First Colony really knows how to hook the player and even starts out in the middle of an epic action sequence. The book can be a very entertaining read, but there are still a few spots that drag along, like the scenes with the mining crew playing poker. However, these slow moments don't last long, and the story is thrown back into action as the crew jump on an opportunity that seems like a lucky break to make quick cash but turns into their worst nightmare. They soon find themselves stranded on a planet trying to use items left behind by another colony to fix their ship while battling off the Akrid.

Lost Planet: First Colony is an engaging story full of colorfully drawn visuals to keep you intrigued. The book does suffer from some less-exciting moments, but overall is a great prologue, and tie-in to Lost Planet 3. If you plan on purchasing Lost Planet 3 for your favorite gamer or sci-fi fan this holiday season, then don't forget to pick up Lost Planet: First Colony for the ultimate gift! Even for those who know nothing about the Lost Planet series, Lost Planet: First Colony is an enjoyable comic that will make any nerd/geek in your life smile!

Lost Planet: First Colony is now available from most major retailers and can be purchased for the MSRP of $9.99. For more information or to purchase a copy of Lost Planet: First Colony, check it out on the official Titan Comics website.
