Chess 2: The Sequel (Video Game Review)

Chess 2: The Sequel is a new release currently available only on Ouya. The game system may be off to a rough console launch, but Chess 2: The Sequel could be a game that can help make the system become a more wanted option for gamers. The game looks good and features and is more entertaining than most chess video games. Players will find plenty of unique rules in the game with many different chess piece sets that come with their own set of rules. Chess 2: The Sequel may be complicated at times, but players can slowly learn each set of rules that goes with each game mode and have a really fun time whether playing offline or with online matchmaking.

Chess 2: The Sequel still uses the typical chess pieces that include pawns, knights, queen and king, but there are some new rules that will players will need to learn for the new release no matter which chess sets are being played. The most important rule is that the king can be moved from the back row and advanced past the midline to win the game. This minor rule change completely alters the way players will approach any match and give players multiple ways to win a match.

The game features six different armies represented by their own unique chess set. This allows for up to 21 different matchups, and though this can make the game difficult for beginners, it's a challenge that is well worth taking for the excitement the offers to experienced players. The armies include a traditional chess set, a reaper army that has a queen capable of teleporting to any space on the board save for the back row and the animals that have more powerful pawns than other sets. Chess is a game that has been around for many centuries, but the new armies completely change the game for the better.

The new Ouya release comes packed with some features that make the game more approachable for gamers. The game is available to play in single player or in online matchmaking. Surprisingly, the game seems to lag or glitch up more when playing the game offline. The game is still fun to play in either mode, when it's working right, and there are different difficulty settings for players to choose AI that matches their skill level when playing offline. The game also features third party controller support that allows players to experience the game with PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 controllers, though it doesn't work as well as players would like.

Chess 2: The Sequel is a good looking game that allows users to easily tell the differences between the distinct armies in the title. The game has good themes and solid sound design that makes taking out an opponent's piece feel great. The game is easy to control as well, though we wish the Ouya controller wasn't the best way to play the game. Chess 2: The Sequel is a fun release and introduces plenty of new mechanics that make the game worth a download on Ouya today. Chess 2: The Sequel offers the biggest improvements to the game of chess since it was first introduced to the video game and computer industries in the 20th century. Download a copy of Chess 2: The Sequel for Ouya today!
