Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God (Video Game Review)

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God is a unique new title available exclusively for PlayStation Vita. The new portable title allows players to experience a bizarre but fun Japanese inspired RPG storyline with roguelike elements. The game can be challenging at times, as players continue to explore the key to surviving various dungeons while searching for rare ingredients needed to make the world's tastiest curry dish and save her restaurant. Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God is a challenging game that forces players to learn the mechanics that make up the new release, even when it doesn't fully explain what players need to do next. Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God isn't a must own title, but players desperate for a new roguelike RPG could do a lot worse.

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God stars a protagonist named Pupuru who is desperate to save her curry restaurant by exploring the deepest dungeons for rare ingredients. There are various characters to encounter throughout the game some of which will help Pupuru in her mission while others will compete with the young girl and try to steal the ingredients from her. The narrative featured in Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God is a strange tale that is full of humor that doesn't always translate well to North American culture. Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God still has an enjoyable storyline, but there are some scenes that seem more bizarre that what players have accustomed to in other RPGs.

Players that take their time to enjoy Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God will be playing for around 30 hours. The game packs a good amount of content for a decent price on PlayStation Vita. The main quest takes players to various dungeons in search of rare and mysterious ingredients to use to create new curry recipes. There are many different ingredients to find in dungeons, and these can be combined to make special foods that can increase Pupuru's statistics temporarily or give other additional benefits. Experimenting with different recipes is a lot of fun and adds additional hours of gameplay while searching for the best recipes that are almost necessary in the toughest boss fights in the game.

Combat in Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God is turn-based and features melee attacks and special magic spells. The game can be difficult, and when a player dies, the entire inventory is lost. Players can use Pupuru's sidekick named Kuu to store items or attack enemies, though players never gain full control of the character, and it often runs off on its own to make it not as useful as it should be. Kuu creates some of the most frustrating circumstances in Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God, but when the companion actually acts as it is supposed to, Kuu can be the difference between failing or succeeding in a tough dungeon.

Players can return to town after clearing a dungeon in Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God. This is where players can store important items or sell goods found in a previous dungeon crawl. There are shops where additional equipment and items can be acquired, and it's always important to use newly found ingredients to make new curry recipes. Exploring dungeons in Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God can be a real level grind until better weapons are unlocked to take out enemies that were once nearly unbeatable with ease. As with most other roguelikes, Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God is very difficult, and players will need to find the best items and gain access to the most powerful magic items to complete the game.

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God is a decent looking game with cute, animated chibi characters taking center stage during unspoken dialogue sequences. The characters do have some stiff animations in combat, and graphic glitches aren't uncommon during fights either, but dungeon layouts are randomized with different themes that helps mix up the action with each new level. Rooms are connected with narrow hallways with randomly placed treasure and enemies in each room, but each level is completely different from another. Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God has an average soundtrack that features just as many catchy tunes as annoying themes to round out a mediocre presentation.

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God offers up a unique premise that is mostly entertaining and enjoyable throughout the 30-hour campaign. Exploring dungeons with random layouts is plenty of fun with interesting combat mechanics, and searching for the best curry recipes is even more addictive. The game does feel a bit strange at times, and the game isn't without problems including minor design flaws and glitches, but it's still a fun game that roguelike RPG fans will want to pick up, and it's only available on PlayStation Vita.
