BioShock: Infinite - Burial at Sea: Episode 1 & 2 (Video Game Review)

2K and Irrational Games released BioShock Infinite last March which took players from the ocean to the skies. Players would step into the lives of Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth while leaving the world of Big Daddies and Little Sisters behind--for now.

The newly released DLC for BioShock Infinite entitled "Burial at Sea" would offer gamers a chance to return to Rapture in a brand-new story. BioShock: Infinite - Burial at Sea: Episode 1 starts out like something out of a Sherlock Holmes novel. The scene opens with Booker in his office, and a beautiful dame, Elizabeth, enters with a case. Elizabeth recruits Booker to find a missing girl by the name of Sally. However, Booker seems to somehow mysteriously be connected to the case even though he doesn't know how or why yet.

BioShock Infinite - Burial at Sea: Episode 1 features a new plasmid, Old Man Winter, and a new weapon, the Radar Range. Players will utilize the new additions to progress through the story which soon takes a dark turn for the worst. Making your way around the underwater world will require unique transportation, and gamers will soon be hopping aboard the Bathysphere and the tram as they encounter eccentric characters, splicers, and of course, Little Sisters and Big Daddies. Of course, nothing in Burial at Sea: Episode 1 is like it seems and a dark, twisted plot lies ahead in this suspenseful addition to the beloved series.

While BioShock Infinite - Burial at Sea: Episode 1 was a very dark episode with a film-noir style, Burial at Sea: Episode 2 starts out like something out of a Disney fairy tale. Elizabeth is having lunch in Paris with beautiful music playing and surrounded by juggling clowns, laughing children and artists painting the town. The fairytale doesn't last and the singing of the blue jays soon fade with the world around you turning dark and dreary.

In Burial at Sea: Episode 2, players now step into the shoes of Elizabeth as she continues the story from the first episode. The team behind BioShock Infinite have not only utilized great writing and storytelling in the Burial at Sea DLC, but also beautiful visuals, that literally draw you into the game. Every last detail in the Burial at Sea has been perfectly executed to fully immerse the player in the experience and deliver an overwhelming emotional response to the game's unique environments and characters.

Elizabeth finds herself tormented by her past mistakes as she now has to deal with Atlas and his goons while guided by the voice of Booker DeWitt. Elizabeth believed that she had made Comstock pay for what he did to her in the last episode, but she soon finds that her actions will have dire consequences that have sent her on a tormented new path through her own tortured mind.

While we can't say too much about the plot of Burial at Sea: Episode 2 without ruining the story, gamers will be surprised at every new turn, with events that unfold so tragically that you will have to hold back the water works in your quest to find Suchong. Elizabeth has limited abilities compared to Booker and must use a more stealthy approach in progressing through the game. Elizabeth has changed and now lacks the ability to see the past or future while no longer being able to open tears. Audio logs are scattered throughout the game to give more insight into what lies ahead.

Since Elizabeth is more vulnerable without shields then she must crouch and crawl quietly by enemies and try to avoid as many as possible. Plasmids are now geared primarily towards Elizabeth needs and give her abilities to quietly go unnoticed, such as The Peeping Tom. The Peeping Tom gives Elizabeth some Superman type abilities that include X-ray vision and the ability to go invisible. When stealth tactics fail, Elizabeth can use the skyhook to swing out of harms way. However, most of the game will require Elizabeth to sneak up behind the enemy by crouching and then press the (Y) button to smack enemies over the head with the skyhook. If Elizabeth is seen by her attacker, then she will have to run around and hide until she looses him through vents and ducking behind objects. A new weapon, the Noisemaker, can also be shot nearby to attract splicers attention away from your main objective. The new stealth approach can be a downside to gameplay for those who liked the more combat-oriented playstyle that the BioShock series is known for.

Burial at Sea: Episode 2 focuses more on the story than on combat and gives the player the option to further explore their environments and scavenge for supplies and upgrades. Picking locks has now become a mini-game, were making a mistake will set off an alarm, but adds a new level of entertainment to the game and the character since Elizabeth no longer spends her time assisting Booker. Elizabeth is by far the most likeable character of the BioShock series and being able to step into her shoes adds a whole new dynamic to the story.

In the end, rather your a newcomer or veteran of the series, Burial at Sea: Episode 1 & 2 adds an immense about of replayability to the game. BioShock Infinite - Burial at Sea: Episode 1 & 2 gives players an entirely new story and campaign that feels more like a full game than DLC. Players are able to shift from Booker's perspective in the first episode to Elizabeth's in the second which offers up tons of new possibilities in gameplay. If you have been looking for a new experience through the world of BioShock, then look no further with BioShock Infinite - Burial at Sea: Episode 1 & 2. The new DLC is well worth the money and will players an intense, action-packed adventure that will leave you breathless.

BioShock Infinite is now available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. BioShock Infinite is rated M for Mature by the ESRB.
