About a Zombie (Movie Review)

About a Zombie is a new horror mockumentary from UK based film studio Revolver Group. The film takes a unique look at the zombie apocalypse from found footage of an Irish family who continues to look after their zombified son after he is infected and turned completely into a walking corpse. An American documentary crew filmed the content for the movie within the movie, and the entire film is shown through various clips with the pregnant girlfriend, family and friends of the zombie protagonist named Billy. The film is a bit difficult to follow for Americans, but it's still a pretty funny film that is worth seeing for fans of the zombie genre.

The film begins with an introduction to the family and friends of the deceased Billy, who now lives at home with his parents and is kept restrained with a muzzle and straightjacket to prevent any further accidents. As the film progresses, the zombie outbreak gets worse for the small town in Ireland, and Billy's family begins feeling the toll of having to constantly take care of their zombified relative. The film also introduces other important characters later including a local gang that isn't impressed by how the zombie outbreak is affecting their business, and viewers also get to see how other citizens in the town treat the family once their secret is out. The story featured in About a Zombie is pretty interesting, and the movie has a lot of good jokes mixed in that will have viewers laughing one scene and feeling sorry for the family and friends Billy left behind the next.

One of the most unique ideas used in About a Zombie is also the film's biggest downfall as well. The film shows many of the documentary clips in succession that allow viewers to learn a bit about the characters and their thoughts on Billy and the zombie outbreak in the city. The segments will only tell a quick story, but typically, there are several of these type of clips in a row, so the film will ofter go 10-15 minutes at a time before showing a real movie scene where something actually happens out in the real world. The mixture of documentary footage and scenes from the real world is very disruptive for viewers and makes the story pretty difficult to follow.

Revolver Group is based in the UK, while the film is based in Ireland. Some of the characters in the film have very deep accents that make them difficult to understand at times for American viewers, despite what is most often above average acting by the film's performers. Since so much of About a Zombie's entertainment value is centered around the dialogue of the characters, this does hurt the chances viewers from this country will enjoy the film. Overall though, About a Zombie is a good film that zombie fans will appreciate, and it manages to do a lot with what appears to be a very low budget used to shoot the film.

About a Zombie is now available exclusively on DVD and can be purchased for $19.98. About a Zombie is not rated. For more information on the film, check out the official About a Zombie website.
